Braniff At ELP And LAX

Fri Aug 17, 2001 7:20 am

Another of my never-ceasing Braniff questions:

Anyone out there recall which terminal/gates Braniff (the original) used at both ELP and LAX?

I believe Braniff flew out of terminal 3 (the TWA terminal) at LAX

From what I can tell from 1952-1979 BN never had regular svc to ELP or ABQ for some reason. In western TX only AMA/LBB/MAF and way long before that Wichita Falls. CO/TI/AA were the main carriers in ELP. EA also had flights there at one point during this time.

I used to commute from LAX-SFO and always took Braniff on their old DC8-62's from Terminal 3. ( A little bit more fun than the PSA 727's at the time). The flights were all continuations of flights coming or going to South America. Loved those big, huge windows and the drapes you could pull closed. No windows shades on these planes.

Continental had a hub in El Paso until the mid 80s when they filed for bankruptcy. Anyone have any information about that hub operation?

I just checked my 2 Braniff timetables from '81 and '82, BN was not serving ELP then.

As for Continental's hub at ELP, when they merged with Texas International in mid-1982, here are the cities each served from ELP:

Continental: Albuquerque, Austin, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Antonio
Texas International: Houston-IAH, Midland/Odessa, Phoenix, Tucson

There were a combined 22 daily departures between them.

In terms of cities served by the two of them at the time, ELP was the third largest market behind DEN-Stapleton and Houston-IAH.
