Cathay A330 To SYD&MEL

Fri Aug 17, 2001 7:46 pm

I checked CX's timetable and found out that they are now operating their new A330-300X on routes to Sydney and Melbourne where previously A340-300 had been operated. After US Airways it's now the second carrier operating the A333 on flights lasting longer than 9 hours. And they don't seem to suffer from payload restictions as in such a case a change from the ultra-longhauler A343X wouldn't have made sense.

But I'm wondering about the configurations. A340s are equipped with First and Business Class while (following CX's timetable) all A330 are equipped with Business only. No satisfying First loads or more damand for Business?
Who knows more?

The second carrier after US Air to use their A330s on long hauls? How about Air Canada? Don't they fly theirs long haul? LTU? SkyService?

The 747-400s will be making much less of an appearance in Australia, and eventually it will be an all Airbus destination with the 777s providing some support.

Please don't get me wrong, I meant the A330-300 only, and again only on flights longer than 9 hours. As far as I know Air Canada uses its A333 only from and to YYZ and YUL which can be reached in less than nine hours, but well, I'm not sure about the MUC-YYZ flight. LTU used to fly the A330-300 to the Caribbean in the winter months but they suffered from payload restictions.

Nevertheless, the A333X can do long hops now and there will definitely be more airlines to use that advantage. But that could also weaken the A343's position.

Air Canada flies Munich to Canada and LTU from Germany to the Carribean and US.
Emirates uses the A330 also for long haul.

Yes, but Emirates's A330 are -200s, and about AC and LT: see my previous post.

That's very long. Considering MH's ones are early models, can these make it without weight penalties?

The A330's CX is sending down to SYD & MEL are their new configurations with the new "Betsy Seat" first class and the new Business class with the lounge and the almost flat seats.

The flights to BNE, CNS, and PER are the older style A330s with just the old Business class and no first.

AFAIK, Malaysia Airlines flies to IST via DXB, otherwise their A330s could not make that without severe payload penalty.

I believe the A330-300s that Cathay flies to SYD with are -300X (or HGW) versions that have a still air range of just over 10000 km compared to about 8800 km for the initial versions. Those figures might be slightly off.
