US Airways Retires Last Dc-9-30 On The 18th

Sat Aug 18, 2001 3:13 am

Hello. It will be a sad sad day for Dc-9 and US Airways fans alike. US Airways will retire its last Dc-9-30 on Saturday August 18th. The Last flight operated by this majestic bird will fly from PHL-PIT (From US's second largest hub to its largest). The Flight Will depart PHL at 8:00PM EST and arrive at PIT at 9:26PM EST. It is scheduled to depart PHL at gate B16 and arrive at gate B36 at PIT. This marks the end of the original Allegheny Airlines airplane. This Dc-9 went into service with Allegheny Airlines in the early 60's and is the last survivor of Allegheny Airlines still in operation with the US Airways Mainline fleet. I believe the reg. of this plane is "N912VJ" but i am not totally sure. I will try to make an apperance at the gate to get photos of the arrival on its last flight at gate B36 at PIT. Photos will be displayed at :

http://www.pitairport.cjb.net

Since this is a night arrival, lighting will be a problem but I hope that i should get a photo of this histric, yet sad event.

Personally, I'm glad to see them finally go. While they were the workhorse for many many years, their age was really beginning to show. Every time the LEDs were dropped on landing, you would hear a very loud groan as the metal slipped along metal. It's time has come, folks.

I would be very interested in seeing those pictures if you can get them. To bad it is gonna be dark though. It would be cool to see it going through the water arches (I would assume they are gonna do that?)

Sad to see them go. I had the privilege to fly on them on YYZ-PHL-YYZ about a year ago- and those flights were butter smooth. I couldn't even hear the engines from where I was sitting. They'll be missed.

Very sad to see them go. It looks like Northwest will be the only major airline in the US to continue using them within this decade. But who knows, tommorow Northwest might decide to retire all of them by late 2002.

Lets hope Northwest keeps these birds flying a little longer for us.

Regards.

I'm going to be at the gate in Pittsburgh when it arrives. Is there going to be some sort of ceremony? Are any of you going to be there?
