Delta 727's (UA, NW And AA Too) Question...

Mon Aug 20, 2001 5:36 am

Yesterday, while I was waiting in line in the blazing hot sun in 90 degree weather at Great America (theme park)here in San Jose, CA, I looked up and there was a DL 722 in the old colors taking off. I have not seen one of these in a long time, and I was wondering just how rare are they becoming now, especially in the old colors. When will DL, AA, UA, and NW be getting rid of their 722s? Is delta repainting any of the 722s in the most current colors? Thanks...

Yes, Delta is going to start fasing out their fleet of 722's. The last time I checked the delta website they said they were going to try to have then and their MD-11's gone by 2005. And yes they have painted quite a few of the 722's in the new paint scheme.

The 727-200s in our fleet will be phased out by 2002. As we speak, it is being replaced by the 148 passenger Airbus A-320. It'll be a sad day when our last three-holer carries its final passengers.

Aviation is proof that, given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible.

There are about 80 DL 727s left in the fleet. Only 5 have been painted in the new colors, and they look great on the old lady.

DL is retiring them at a rate of about 20 a year. They will be gone from the fleet by 2004.

The 727 you saw in SJC was departing for SLC.

The 727's are being rapidly replaced by 737-800's, with most of the new deliveries going to flying in/out of SLC and the NYC crew base (JFK,LGA,EWR).

I think that the DL LAX 727 crew base is being closed by the end of the year. 727 flying out west will be further replaced by the new planes.

In fact, I expect 727-200's to be gone from California skies by 2003 at latest. They'll all be replaced by 737-800's (AA and DL) and A320's (UA).
