Alaska Airlines New Service At YYC

Tue Aug 21, 2001 8:33 am

I just saw a notice while checking the AS stock quote at Yahoo! that AS is announcing service from Calgary to a major US city tomorrow in a ceremony at YYC, it doesn't say which city or when this service will begin. My bet would be LAX since SEA is already serviced by Horizon, but does anybody out there have any thoughts or hunches on this?

There is no mention of new service from YYC in alaskasworld.com nor has there been any such suggestion to the "rank and file" employees of Alaska. If an announcement is made tomorrow, it would represent a major departure from past practice at AS, which is to first announce plans/applications for new services to employees through internal memos and the alaskasworld website.

Are you sure the announcement was not in regard to increased frequencies between YYC and SEA? I seem to recall an announcement some months ago that an additional daily roundtrip would be added to the existing schedule between the two cities. Or could the ceremony be about the inauguration of CRJ-700 service between YYC and SEA?

If it is true that Alaska will announce new service tomorrow (8/22), from Calgary to a major U.S, city, my bet is also on LAX, if only because no other city in the AS/QX system seems to be a likely choice. Until Canadi>n was absorbed by Air Canada, AS had its own code share flight numbers on CP's daily non-stop YYC-LAX/LAX-YYC services.

LAX, maybe, although with C3 flying the route and loads moderate at AC, I dunno. How about Portland???

I read the article to be that AS mainline is starting some kind of service, not Horizon.

Well, LAX was the first obvious destination that I thought of... but with AC183 commenting that C3 and AC are already flying that route I don't know. It has to be a place in a warmer, sunny climate that people will want to travel to... I'm now thinking perhaps SAN or LAS since there is no N/S service from YYC to either place, as is the story with PDX, but PDX just doesn't seem to make much business sense. I guess time will tell... 14 hours until the announcement.  Smile

My best bet would be on LAX, as I think that if it were PDX it would be Horizon, although I do sort of think PDX would be a good potential market, untapped but I would say some potential there as a business route.

YYC does indeed have LAS flights, they're sort of seasonal, and often charters, but WestJet, Air Canada, Canada3000, Air Transat, and I believe also Skyservice are all in on it. SAN, well, I just don't see it really. But maybe, who knows.

We'll see, I'm looking forward to it with interest...

Yes...I would put my money on LAX too. It probably has the greatest mix of biz and tourist pax. SFO could be an option but I doubt it. If they really wanted tourist pax maybe PHX...but maybe not, although I think AS has PHX-YVR weekend service.

Although who knows..they could just be upgrading SEA to some mainline. PDX could have a market, but I'll agree it would be for QX probably.

Anyone wonder what type of plane. My guess would be a 737-700, if they're available. AS seems to like touting the 73G in its articles about new service, like LAX-CUN, etc. Plus the -700 has less seats than a 734/9 or M80. Although it might be a 734, and since it doesn't seem like the prestigious of routes it could be MD80...who knows.

Hmmm..... I can't wait to here where the route ends up flying to. I'd guess LAX but it's already heavily covered. just a wild guess could alaska be taking over horizon's fligt from seattle due to loads? Just a guess.

LAX, eh? Not hard to have guessed...

"you have ten dollars, would you like to try for twenty?"

Rather boring move, IMO, I would have preferred something different and innovative, but we'll see how this does. I have a suspicion that QF may codeshare on the YYC-LAX the same way it does out of YVR. And I believe AA also codeshares with AS, don't they, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see AA code on this route, either.

Interesting they mention the connections to Mexico - I'd have to question the wisdom of that given the business of the sunspot markets out of YYC with the charters.

It's LAX-YYC using MD80. Introductory fares will be as low as $248 roundtrip with tax.
