ATA@MDW To International Destinations?

Starting February 2002 ATA will have flights to Puerto Viallatra, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Punta Canta, and Aruba from Midway. Do you think that Midway should be used as a international airport or used as a municipal airport like it has been doing? Do you think that ATA should move their international destinations to another airport besides Midway? They had just built a new terminal entrance and they are going to build new gates there in the years ahead and a customs facility for international travelers. Do you think that Midway can handle International passengers or was it meant for regular people just traveling in the USA?

Why not? How much does it really take to add a customs facility? Especially with all the work they are doing already, what's one more thing on the list?

Well first of all, MDW is not a municipal airport. It is a domestic airport. Secondly the new terminal facilities will allow enough space for customs to be built. This was in the original plans for expansion since ATA wanted to add international service out of its number 1 hub. MDW has been a real winner for them and they're just going to keep on expanding there. MDW can easily handle international flights because we're obviously not talking about 747's or other widebodies but rather 737's and 757's to international destinations. The airport already handles those types of aircraft, so increased passenger volumes shouldn't be too much of a problem. Once the new terminal and gates are complete, there should be no problem adding international destinations. The only airline likely to fly outside the US from there would be ATA and there are rumors that Mexicana might start service there.

Are the new gates at MDW goin to be big enough for 762/763 ? That would be a huge mistake for them not to be, as the runways can already handle them.

757-300 is the largest aircraft Midway is certified to handle by the FAA.

Ummm.. I think their L-1011-1s are bigger than 763s. Am I wrong?

Also, they don't fly anything that big anymore. The L10s are being replaced by 753. Why would Midway want to spend the money to handle a 767 when they don't fly them?

well, the runways ARE enough for the 762, thats for sure. from: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/767family/background.html
With its advanced-design wing and powerful engines, and at a maximum gross weight of 300,000 pounds (136,080 kg), the basic 767-200, can take off on only 5,700 feet (1,735 m) of runway. It can operate nonstop between New York and San Francisco with a two-class load of 224 passengers.
The runway 13C/31C at Midway is approx. 6500 feet long, im not saying that the terminal and ramp area could take it, but the runway can. i just was asking if the terminal gates would be made big enough for it.

They can't handle the L-1011 cause of the runway and the noise restrictions

Noise restrictions have nothing to do with the L10 not going to MDW. 727's are louder. Lack of runway and ramp space is. However the airport can handle a 767 but I really doubt that they are planning anything bigger than a 753 for that field.

MDW facilities runways/Terminal area cannot handle a L10. A fully loaded L1011-100 has a very long takeoff roll over 11,000 feet check it out in the stats. The 753 realy isnt replacint he Tristars it is supplementing them and adding new services to our scheduled rte structure that the 752 wasnt suffice. The Tristars will mainly be used on our military contracts/charters and our west coast operations to Hawaii. The tristar 500's will be used on long range charters.

Well, the L1011 can surely take off on shorter fields than 11,000ft... Geez folks.. Do some ReSeArCh... Delta used to have L1011's at LGA... 7000ft.

ATA@midway I said a fully loaded 100 takes 11,000 or so, I know a lightly loaded one can do that bud!

yea ATA does have L1011 flights out of ORD. Ive seen a few myself.

Yeah, ATA does Pleasant Hawaiin Holidays charter flights twice a week out of ORD, as well as other charter stuff to Mexico, LAS, and other spots. The L10 is a regular at ORD.
