Good Year For Airline Safety?

Tue Aug 21, 2001 2:00 pm

There haven't been any big crashes this year? The last couple of years have each had a number of crashes. Do you think air travel has gotten safer, or is this just a lucky year???

Yes, it's been pretty good so far this year let's hope it stays that way. As to why - perhaps a little of both.

According to ASN there have been 280 fatalities this year (RA-85845 was the worst with 145).

It has been safe, but perhaps we shouldn't jinx it by talking about it...just a suggestion.

I thought most regarded Tu-154 as major crash, considering more people died in that one then on the concorde. Perhaps Russian planes arent counted into statisics because most people expect soviet airliners to crash anyway.......

Each crash gives new informations about how to improve safety.
Safety is always improving. Unfortunately, shit happens, men make mistakes, planes are old and not 100 % safe, and bad luck is sometimes there. I'm sure that speeking about it won't change anything (I'm sure you don't have a black cat AC340), but who knows what will happen in the next months ?

It seems that there is a couple of major crashes each year; last year we had Air France and Singapore Airlines. Lately I've had the feeling that this year has been too quiet. There are loads of airlines that haven't had an accident for decades - QF, BA, LH, IB, OA, DL, CO, CX, AI, SAA, NW, UA... I'm not going to finish the thought, you know what I mean.
