OAK-Aloha? Spirit? JetBlue? Corsair? Huh?

Dude, I was just at OAK today picking somebody up. That airport has serious problems. I have not seen more construction in such a small area in my life. The airport itself is very run down and old and crappy. Southwest, American, Alaska and some other normal airlines go there, but as I'm walking past the ticket counters...Aloha, and Spirit and Corsair? I knew Aloha went into OAK but didnt know Spirit did. I'm thinking the Corsair ticket counter was just a codeshare. My question is, why would those two airlines (Aloha and Spirit) pick OAK instead of SFO or SJC? That airport is seriously strange and I just don't see why they wouldn't have gone with a bigger airport here in the bay area...

OAK is cheaper. jetBlue flies two (soon three) dailies to JFK and will soon fly a daily to IAD. Crosair is NOT a codeshare. They do fly OAK-ORY. Don't know about the frequency though.

Because OAK is not a UA hub, and doesn't suffer from SFO's delay problems in bad weather.

I was at SFO this past weekend, SUN AUG19
and saw a Corsair 747-300 reg : F-GSEA
thought they operated in/out of OAK !!!!!!!

have they changed their departure city ?

No, they fly to OAK but due to runway work going on, they had to reroute to SFO.

OAK is not as bad as you make it seem, it is much more convenient for much of the Bay Area population than is SFO, which requires crossing the Bay Bridge into the city with possible traffic delays. SFO is notoriously prone to fog, rain and therefore flight delays. OAK is practically as close to downtown San Francisco as is SFO which is located in another county south of SF. I always try to fly out of OAK instead of SFO. OAK is the preferred, more convenient airport for many passengers and I think airlines may be recognizing this. CO is advertising its flights out of OAK, DL is agressively promoting its flights to "Atlanta and beyond" and SW has pulled out of SFO to focus on OAK and SJC.

Just as Bakyunham noted, Aloha chose Oakland as it's first mainland destination because it's just as convienent to the bay area as SFO, without the traffic nightmares. Plus there is a high number of former island residents that live in the Oakland area and San Jose.

What kind of development/construction is going on at OAK-Oakland International Airport?

OAK is actually located closer to more of the population in the Bay Area than SFO is and the distance from downtown SF to OAK is the same as it is to SFO. OAK just last week finalized the plans for their new terminals and construction will probably start sometime next year. Most of the current construction is new access roads. Corsair has flown into OAK for many years. They operate ORY-OAK-PPT(Tahiti)-OAK-ORY. I think they started in 1993 or 1994. Spirit and Jet Blue started earlier this year and Aloha started last year. OAK is Southwest main hub here in the Bay Area and is one of their biggest cities. Mexicana is also flying into OAK these days. The main reason some of these airlines are choosing OAK is that it cost less to fly in there and it is not congested, and is not subject to massive weather delays any time the sun does not shine like across the bay at SFO.
