Spotting At CLT

Thu Aug 23, 2001 11:17 am

Does anyone know of some good locations aroung Charlotte-Douglas Airport to watch takeoffs/landings? I've tried the parking garage, but I'd like to get closer, if possible. BA flys a 777 in and out of there sometimes, and US has a 330 that departs daily, and I'd like to get a nice, close look. Any ideas?

Yes there is an airport overview which you can see terminal A and Part of B pretty good as well as the US Airways hanger. It over looks Runway 36L/18R . Its a great view if the planes are taking off and landing towards the south because the over view is on the North end of the runway. To get there...

Enter the airport from the main enterence. I think it's called Josh Birmingham Pkwy. Turn Right towards Satellite 1 & 2 parking. Make a left onto Old Dowd Rd. This will wind around the to the west side of runway. The road will go up hill a little and begin to bend to the right. The enterence to the overlook is on the left.

I was just there tonight for about an hour between 6:30pm and 7:45pm. It seems like a good time to go, it was pretty busy plus I saw 4 A321's 3 757's, 1 A330, and 1 767 of US Airways besides the tons of 737's F-100's MD-80's A319/20's. I just moved here last week so I havn't found all the good places to view but that should get you started atleast. If anyone knows a good place on the other side of the airport that would be cool.

Correction

corrections on the directions.

After you make a left onto Old Dowd Rd turn left onto Wallace Neel Rd once you pass on the other side of Runway 18R. Then...the road will go up hill a little and begin to bend to the right. The enterence to the overlook is on the left. Sorry about that.
