Wierd Stuff We Thought When Young

Thu Aug 23, 2001 11:10 pm

Can you think of anything strange you thought about airplanes when you were little? I remember something that is quite ludicrous.

I thought that the 747 was made when a DC8 (I flew United) couldn't stop in time & ran into the terminal, got a bump on its head that never went away.

My god how I've changed since then!!!!!

When I was about 8, I thought that there were motors on the wheels that powered the a/c along for takeoff.

I used to think airlines made their own planes and that Southwest had no engines on their planes so they were quieter  Big grin

I thought the American Eagle ATR42's were DC9's  Nuts and the Mesaba ATR42's were, well, ATR's.

American Airliners 707
LAX-ORD
1978

I remeber when I was 5 years old, begging my mother to take me up to the 'lump' upstairs before we crash into the ocean.
Because it was a 4 engine jet, I thought it was a 747 like in the movie Airport '77.

When I was little(5 or 6), Continental ran television ads with the slogan "We really move our tail for you!" I remember flying Continental one time when I was small, and at or near the end of the flight, I went to the back of the plane and asked the flight attendant if I could see them move the tail like they said in the commercials!  Laugh out loud

lol!

When i was like 6 i thought there was a ramp at the end of the runway which made the plane go up  Laugh out loud

Also, i thought that the sound of the thrust reversers was the wind against the spoilers.

When I first heard the word "hangar" I thought they actually hung up the planes in there!  Laugh out loud

Ditto about the thrust reverser comments.

And how 'bout this, that airplanes stay up because the wings "push the air down", under them.

When I was little, I wondered what the big deal about a plane crash was. I figured that all the passengers had to do was jump out of the plane just before it hit the ground. Never clued into the fact that passenger, plane, and everything else were all travelling at the same speed !

I guess I watched too many Cyote & Road Runner cartoons ?  Smile

I thought that taxiways and runways were just normal roads that cars drove on as well, and cars and planes shared them -- if we were taxing/taking off, the cars would yield for us!

Mard_D,

Weell, the airplane kinda DOES fly because the wings push the air down. Only the air also pushes the wings up, hence what we call lift...

I thought contrails were only made by very big planes, like widebodies only.

I also though that on approach and landing, the airplane doesn't slow down at all, but instead charges at full speed all the way to touchdown.

I remembered another thing; I always used to think that the airport was THE airport; that planes would take off, fly around, land, then we would go to Disneyland or wherever. I actually considered flying a waste of time!!

I am 21 years old now, and I haven't been able to live this one down all this time...On a flight to Hawaii when I was 5, I was with my parents, brother and cousins and aunts/uncles. After we took off we went thru the clouds and I said "Dad, are we by God yet?"

One time when I was really little I had to be re-assured the the plane I was sitting in was not a "big plane" like the one parked at the next gate over. I thought that the big planes were scarrier because the pilots would spin them upside down at times. Don't know where I got that one from.

Oh...one more thing. All growing up until about age 12, I use to look at the safety cards (before I even cared what the hell they were) and I remember always seeing the oxygen masks over the people's faces and it use to always freak me out. I had a thing about breathing when i was a kid...so go figure.

When I was first getting into aviation in middle school, I had a book about different airlines, that was from 1975. So when I saw my first A340s, Aerolineas Argentinas, TAP and Lufthansa I figured they were 707s, because the only 4 engined plane besides the 747 listed as part of the fleets of those carriers were 707s. It wasn't until I actually flew on one in 1995 that I realised that Airbus made other planes besides the A300.

I thought there was a parachute under each seat in case it was needed. And of course, that you could actually jump and save your life. I was very impressed when they told me that wasn't the case.

I used to think that planes wheels powered them until they were in the air and then the engines turned on. I also thought planes landed on their bellys!

I thought that planes "flew" because they achieved such a high speed, gravity could not get a hold of them.

i grew up in new york, and we would always fly back to lga from vacation in florida, and i would always be terrified when we approached to land over the water (the runway doens't show up out the window until you practically hit it) that we were ditching. this was when i was like 7.

As has been mentioned, I also thought there was a ramp at the end of the runways. The first airport I ever saw was PIT at night. I spent hours at the hotel window watching and it seemed that all the aircraft hit a ramp to takeoff. My grandparents coudn't understand why I didn't just go to sleep.
A friend of mine admits that he used to think reverse thrust was actually that. The air blowing out the front of the engines.

Once when i was 5 I flew from DFW to ORD. We got to ORD and had to sit for a while because there were no gates. My mom told me this, and I thought it was an actuall chain link fence with barbed wire on top, and the ground crew didn't want to open it to let us through.

My mother still insists I actually passed out cold aboard a factory fresh American DC-10 when I was 5 or 6 and, after my inquiry, was told by a smiling flight attendant that jetliners didn't carry parachutes.

I used to think that airports had hundreds of runways and handled millions of flights per day. I was shocked when I found out that my local airport (KBUF) had only four runways! Of course, I also thought that KBUF was the largest airport in the world!

I also remember thinking before my first flight ever that takeing off in a DC9 was like taking off in a rocket ship...imagine my disapointment.

I used to thought that planes had parachutes.
I also used to think that when a plane is in danger like full engine loss and its falling to the ground this big parachute opens up and the plane lands safely.
I also used to think that planes had pointy tails.
and when I saw overflying planes i thought they were fighter jets about to drop bombs!

I used to think that airplanes where very big. That was based on the size of the windows. They just had to be the same size as those bay living room windows we had in the house.

When I heard a American jet had made a belly landing, I wondered why it needed all the emergency equipment, I figured it could just lower the gear, raise itself up, and get to the gate.

When I was a kid I thought it was very exhausting to handfly the plane all the time. Later on I didn't believe the people who told me that pilots read their newspaper during cruise and had (almost) nothing to do apart from talking on the radio once in a while!

I thought that it was really only the engines that made it fly and the rest was only for appearance (to look like a bird!). I also thought using the thrust reversers were for the passengers enjoyment of the flying experience, not to do with actually flying the plane! Gosh did I really write that..  Laugh out loud

i thought the small little conical air con vents in the cabin above your seats are emergency engines to keep the plane in the air if the main engines quit! you know they whirl with such power (with respect to a young boy) when you turn them to the max especially on other jets.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have lost all 4 engines and losing altitude. Please save your own skins and mine by turning the engines located above you!"

when I was young I had no interest in planes. I though it was absolutely crazy though that the engines only worked in air and not in the water. For example if the plane ditched or crashed in the ocean it could still use the engines submerged in the water to power itself to land. My sister believed that planes took you to a city and it was located in the clouds.
