Air India Livery Q

Sat Aug 25, 2001 3:29 am

I'd like to know what the symbol is on the engines of the Air India AC ( at least the 744s I see at JFK). It looks to be half horse / have archer. Is this a Hindu symbol? If so, could you explain its meaning in Hinduisim?

Thanks,

It is the mythical Greek Centaur. Nothing Hindu about it. The centaur was first introduced by JRD Tata on Air India's Constellations in the late 40s, and it stayed on. Surprisingly, the current crop of right wing Hindu politicians haven't raised a ruckus about it, but I suspect its because they're a bunch of illiterate, uneducated loutish bumpkins who don't know what a Centaur is, let alone classical Greece. So the hapless centaur lingers on, not quite knowing what its doing on an AI 744 engine nacelle.

I think AI's livery needs a massive overhaul. I love the palace windows, but they seem terribly dated now. And the centaur and the palace windows certainly make for an odd multi-cultural mishmash.

Jaysit,

I agree with you about the need for a new livery. Man, I wish there was someone out there thinking about revamping the whole airline inside out, up and down! It's about time.

I know that this is just a dream, but anyway, here is my idea of a new livery:

A not too dark grey (on the entire A/c) with a large image of the "ratha" (chariot - representing a vehicle, on the front part of the fuselage) as seen in drawings of the Mahabharat and other scriptures. The chariot should be in bright colors (just like what THAI has done with its "Royal Barge" design).

Windows should maintain the "palace" theme, but they should be redesigned to look different from the current ones. The tail should carry a bright red "Chakra" or may be something else that would represent India.

Beige as a background color (like Saudia) would also be nice.

Howz'at?

I recognized the centar from old western myth, but wondered what its significance (if it were even the same thing) was in Hinduisim. Disappointed to hear it has none.Ah well.

Interesting Idea. I agree with the beige background, ala Saudia, but I think they should ditch the whole palace windows look and just go in for a sharp, modern distinctive look. An Indian touch can always be maintained in the cabin interiors. Also, you know that if they put rathas from the Mahabharata on their planes, the Muslim League would have a cow, so to speak. So, I say, keep politics - and religion (the two big divisive issues in India) - out of AI !

Religion and Politics should have been kept out in the first place but thats what got the best of them which is why AI is unable to reach it's full potential as a world class airline. I think they need to be privitized. Just look how well Jet Airways is doing.

I think the tail needs a little updating. BUt i guess the rest should stay as it is. I sure wouldnt recoginse an AI jet w/o those windows!

On the tail, Not the sun again, nooo! THe Centaur on the tail woudl look downright ugly.

The symbol is called the Maharajah and it is a man who is the mythical ruler of India and is the mascot of the airline since many years.
