Why Does YMM Have AC F28 Service?

Sat Aug 25, 2001 8:44 am

This really bugs me. Before Wesjet begun service to YMM, AC had 2 Dash 8-100 flights to daily to the airport from YEG. Now that Westjet is serving the airport, AC now has 5 flights daily, 2 with F28's, one with a -300 dash 8 and the other with -100's. So whats the deal here, before they could care less about the place and all of the sudden it requires all this extra capacity. The reason this gets to me is because I live in a town that is served by only dash 8's, and those stuck up idots at AC wouldn't introduce jet service to YKA if the company's survival depended on it. But if if Westjet were to begin service here with their 737's, AC's F28's would be buzzing around in no time. AC's monopoly in the regional market burdens smaller comunities with those disguisting dash 8's and ridiculous fare's until competition arrives. It's not fair for either the spotters or the travelers.

Does anyone feel the same way?

It's not fair for either the spotters or the travelers.

I really hate to say this, but most travelers (non-aviation enthusiasts) don't care what the plane is. As long as it gets them there comfortably and safely, they won't care.

AC must have its reasons......

If it didn't matter to the travelers, the why isin't AC only serving YMM with dash 8's? The travel time is only a diffrence of around 10 minutes, and the capacity is nearly identical.

While this may come as a complete shock to you, AC doesn't give damn if its being "fair" to spotters. They will operate whichever aircraft their bean-counters say will make a profit on that route.

Another surprise for you may be that the Dash8 is a very popular regional turboprop, which passengers rather enjoy. that and most passengers couldn't ID an aircraft if you held a gun to their head. I heard one gentlemen refer to our A320 flight as "flying on one of those Boeing Airbuses. Great american built planes."  Yeah sure

I wouldn't really call them stuck up idiots, they are doing what they need to do to make money, and if that includes not serving YKA with jets, then so be it.
The only stuck up person I see here is you. Don't expect to snap your fingers and have AC jump to meet your desires.

Yes its tough to live in a monopoly, but you just need to bear it, and hope some other airline decides to serve YKA with your wonderful little jets

Hey dude,

Be very fortunate you have AC Fokker f28s!!! Id give my right arm to see an F28 drop into my local airports everyday.......We lost our airservice (and I lost a parttime job) when Great Lakes decided to pull its twice daily service to Ohare with beech 1900s back on 2 April 1999.......So be satisfied with what you have......casue you just might lose that and then youll relal y be crying!!!!

Remember, Wherever you go, there you are!!!!

My complaint isnt that AC is not serving YKA with jets but that they are charging huge fares and flying second rate aircraft to places that dont offer any competition. Like I said its not fair for the Canadian public who are sometimes forced to pay for AC's stuck up nature. Same thing happend in case of the YVR-YXT, AC droped thier fares by half when Hawk Air(I think that the name)offered them some competiton with their dash 8. I still think AC is a terrible, self centered and greedy airline.

I assure you, but I doubt you'll listen, that the Dash8 is anything but a second-rate aircraft.

I think you need to read up a bit on how businesses function (especially a monopoly), and you'll realize that without any competition, AC can charge what ever they feel like.

A full service, international airline like Air Canada (Say AA, BA, or UA) would use the exact same business practices as youre experiencing in the same situation.

YKA, you've got your facts wrong, AC has had 5 flights on YEG-YMM ever since the merger, that number hasn't changed since WJ entered the market. Your claim of 2/day was only the AirBC flights some time ago, and didn't include the Canadian Regional flights.

As far as spotting goes, I can understand why you would want to see F28's, but I've flown on both the Dash8's and the F28's, and I think you should think twice before including travellers in the group that would benefit from F28 service. The F28's are fine aircraft for their day, but plainly put, the Dashes are quieter, more comfortable, and are much better performers in smaller strips or in bad weather. I would not call the Dash8 second rate by any means. In fact, I would be more inclined to call the F28 second-rate (although I can't say it's a bad airplane, but it's rather outdated).

As to why YMM has F28 service, I would suggest that part of it is because some of the flights continue on from YEG to YYC. And also simply a matter of there having been service there with F28's before, so schedule changes haven't replaced it.

The bottom line is that YMM has more demand for air traffic. A large part of this is due to the oil industry, and also due to the remote area characteristics it has. YKA can grow, and could potentially be a good market for the likes of WJ, but in the meantime their yield planners have good reason for seeing YMM as a more important market to be in first.
