Alitalia In Atlanta

Sun Aug 26, 2001 12:44 am

Now that Alitalia is scheduled to be integrated into Sky Team, do you guys think that they will add some flights to ATL to connect there with DL?

Possibly. Although a more likely scenario would be DL using either a B777 or an MD11 year round from ATL
to FCO and either introducing its own ATL-MXP flight
or AZ would begin daily ATL-MXP flights, alongside
the DL ATL-FCO flight.

What I would like to know is what will happen to AZ
schedules in NYC. Alitalia has one flight daily to FCO
and MXP from JFK (two to FCO in summer) and daily
to FCO and MXP from EWR. Delta has its own flights
to both FCO and MXP, from JFK.

I think DL will continue to operate one, with AZ the
other and both will be 767-300ER's. The EWR flights
I don't think will survive.

The EWR flights work very well, so I'm not sure if AZ will move to JFK, but maybe in order to reduce handling cost and now that DL can give to AZ some gates, maybe they will move into JFK.

The ATL-MXP will start very soon, probably it will fly by DL at the beginning cause AZ hasn't enought long-haul planes available at the moment, but AZ want to operate all the long-haul flights out of MXP and give to the patners the flights from FCO.
The ATL-FCO will be year round (today is only in the summer) with DL planes.

Look for DL and AZ to operate MXP/FCO-ATL in the near future. 1 daily each for double daily service. CVG-MXP would follw soon, probably on DL. More interesting routes would be from JFK to Turin (don't have the airport code handy), MXP-MCO-MEX in 3 way cooperation with AM/AZ & DL.

Hi:

I think that is a certain possibility. I think that Alitalia will serve the route ATL-MXP with a MD-11 or a Boeing 767-300 because Delta not serve this route. And the fligths to Rome will be in codeshare with Delta. So the flights from USA to Italy will be:

ATL-FCO operated by Delta.
ATL-MXP operated by Alitalia.
JFK-MXP operated by Delta and Alitalia.
JFK-FCO operated by Delta and Alitalia.
JFK-VCE operated by Delta.

Alitalia will more than likely keep its current NYC schedules. Their flights are doing very well, and the majority of time, their 747's are full (if not over booked). WHich is why they have a 2x daily flight to FCO (1 w/ 742, 1 w/ 763).

This will probably continue in addition to DL's flights.

My question is...with AZ having ordered 777's, how will they meet market requirements for JFK/EWR when most flights are full, and the 777's (From what I've heard) have been earmarked at first for SFO/LAX and NRT/HKG.

I still think they should order some 744s! :-(

I suppose they could have some free aircraft as long as they don't retire anything when they get the 777s. If they replace an MD-11 flying LAX/SFO-MXP with a 777 they'd then be able to fly MXP-ATL with that spare MD-11. Are the 777s meant as a replacement for the old 747s or the MD-11s?

777s are going to replace 742s.There aren't programs to replace MD-11s at that moment.
Any ideas for a signature?

I've heard they might bring back MIA-FCO and start BOS-FCO as part of thier entrance into skyTeam. Any truth to this?

I don't think ATL-FCO is summer only. We non-reved on the flight in January.

If LAX doesn't get the 777, AZ will have to introduce it on SFO. The route is lacking of bigger equipment. It is always jam packed(I flew it twice) and cargo capacity is needed too. SFO will get 777s before any other destination. Guaranteed.

Aio86, SFO-MXP is flown by a 767-300ER. I think the two US routes using the MD-11 are MIA-MXP and LAX-MXP, both daily.

From rumors I heard, AZ will use 777s on these routes:
MXP-SFO
MXP-BOS
MXP-ORD

and probably re-open the MXP-BKK-SYD, but about the last flight I wrote is only a speculation.

MXP-LAX will keep the MDD-11 combi for next summer.

Yes LAX will keep the MD11C. The extra Cargo capacity is needed in Los Angeles over SFO which needs, obviously, a good cargo capacity, which is very good on the 777 but needs the extra pax space.

ATL-FCO on Delta is year round 767-300.
Alitalia will start MXP-ATL service, soon, most likely with the 777, possibly being the first 777 route for them.
Alitalia WILL come to Atlanta.

And more than likely, Alitalia's flight out of BOS will become a codeshare as well. Has Alitalia ever served ATL in the past? I know the only service they currently have @ ATL is cargo flights handled by Atlas Air.

What do you think about AZ in MCO or FLL since they are both DL focus cities? Of course, I would think it would be more likely for DL to start these routes.

Srbmod, I think all of AZ's flights will have DL codeshares, like with AF. The NW/AZ deal was not as extensive though. If I have it right, NW had thier tag on LAX/BOS/MIA-MXP and JFK-FCO and the only NW route that AZ had thier tag on was DTW-MIA and DTW-FCO. I am not sure though (I guess the main way it worked was that it routed Milan passengers via Miami and Rome passengers via Detroit).

LV, I doubt it. I don't see AZ at FLL because AZ is already flying daily into MIA, 19 miles north. AZ's 7 weekly flights out of MIA are just enough to justify the Miami-Italy market (though I could see them doing 10 weeklies). As for MCO, no way. MCO is a low-yield market and most of the trans-Atlantic market from MCO comes from the United Kingdom. Don't see demand whatsoever. Other than ATL and maybe more flights to FCO out of BOS and MIA, don't look for anything big. I doubt AZ will enter CVG, and definitley not SLC. Though, the other main Euro skyTeam member, AF, at FLL doesn't sound like a bad idea (Miami-France market is second only to New York-France) and AF at MCO does not sound bad either.

AZ did serve Atlanta with cargo flights for about two years with MD-11s. Now that service is run with Atlas.

LV, as for service to MCO and FLL...don't look for that happening because Delta does not do international out of either of those and none of the SkyTeam partners go there except for AeroMexico, so I don't see it changing just because AZ joins.
