767-400 & A330-200

Mon Aug 27, 2001 12:33 am

I understand that these two jetliners are quite, if not very similar, in most ways but I'm still baffled as to why the A332 has crushed the 764 with regards to sales !?!

The A332 was available before the 764 was. Until the 767-400LR comes along, the A332 has the range advantage over the 767-400ER.
The A332's similarity to other A330/340 family members must have had something to do with its succes.
Charter and holiday airlines seem to prefer the A332, it may have something to do with the fact that the you have the choice of putting 8 or 9 seats abreast (you can put 8 seats abreast on a 767, but I don't think it will have the same seat width).

Hmmm...I just checked out the Boeing site and there is no mention of a 767-400LR, just the ER version.

Cheers

Boeing shelved plans for the 767-400LR.

I dont think that was a good move for Boeing because you could have had more airlines with that product. Like Air Canada maybe which could lead in to more boeings being ordered.

Does the 764 have a 777 style flightdeck or is it a hybrid 767/777 layout? I have heard the latter, which makes no sense to me.

The A330 is also a slightly bigger plane, both for pax and cargo capacity. It was designed to meet a growing market which wanted something a little bigger than the 767, and has ended up being slightly smaller than the later released 777, at whose heels it nips ever so slightly (the Northwest order and also the pending KLM order request, for example). Maybe that is where Boeing thinks its best competition is for the A330, because I agree that I was surprised that they shelved plans for the 764-ERX.

Besides Delta & Continental what other airlines have ordered the 767-400? I haven't heard many new sales for the jet in the past year.

I was surprised too that they shelved plans for the 767-400LR. However, the reason I think they decided to do so is in favor of there Sonic Cruiser. Boeing had plans to improve the rest of the 757 and 767 family, however those have been shelved completely aswell.

Regards.

For the record, Travelin' Man. Northwest did not order any A332s, they were all A333s. The 332, in NW's configuration would not have sufficient capacity in terms of pax.

And regarding KLM's 'pending' order. When was the initial letter of intent signed? This is news to me.

Dean,
The Kenya Airways order was for the B767-400ERX, which has now been cancelled. Their options are to convert to the B767-300ER (which they already operate) or order the A330-200. The B767-400ER does not have enough range for Kenya Airways European operations out of Nairobi.

KLM's Upcoming Order

Mon Aug 27, 2001 2:11 am

KLM is most likely to order a full load of 777's because it is extremely rare for KLM to order some Airbus jets. This upcoming order might be an exception to the statement I just made, but I think that all signs point to a KLM 777 order. It is highly unlikely that KLM will ever order an A330-200 since Northwest already has the A330-300 on order.

I have read that KLM is looking at up to 34 aircraft in the 300 seat catagory at this time. So the A330-200 and 777-300ER are out...for now.

The 764 flight deck is the same flight deck as the 777 except the three dials next to the pilots controls are glass on the 777 and standard on the 764. 763 pilots can not fly the 764 (DL 757/767 crews have told me this).

I would look for American and United to also order the 764 down the line, as both are large 767/777 operators, and they both need an aircraft in between the 763 and 777.
