Darwin Next Stop For Virgin Blue

Mon Aug 27, 2001 7:29 am

This article "confirms" what many have been guessing for a while. It is interesting to note Qantas and Ansett's current round of price discounting... I wonder whether they have somehow got info on Virgin's new routes and pre-empted the cheap prices (ie: on Darwin and Perth fares).

Next stop Darwin for Virgin Blue

DARWIN is expected to be Virgin Blue's next destination as the low-cost carrier adds three planes to its fleet over the next four months.

The airline is negotiating with airport authorities in Darwin and an announcement is likely within three weeks. Virgin, which celebrates its first anniversary this week, is also investigating services to Hobart and Launceston as it moves to expand its reach to all capital cities. The moves come after the airline signed an agreement last week with Adelaide airport to operate out of its own dedicated domestic terminal.

Under the deal, Qantas and Ansett will operate out of the new facility, while Virgin Blue will shift from the international terminal to the Qantas domestic terminal.

Virgin plans to use Adelaide as a hub for its flights, which are likely to include a Perth service some time next year.

The carrier revealed on the weekend that it was talking with US and European airlines about a possible partial float next year.

Chief executive Brett Godfrey said he had canvassed possible investments with Britain's easyJet and Ryanair and US carrier Southwest Airlines.

Meanwhile, Ansett has matched a Qantas fare sale that offers $66 one-way tickets on east coast and Tasmanian routes, as well as $99, $132 and $198 one-way fares to destinations as far away as Perth.

I suppose after this, Tasmania might be on the cards, in particular Hobart.
