US Airways to Begin Portland, Oregon Flights From Pittsburgh and Philadelphia
ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Portland, Ore., will be added as a new destination on the US Airways route network when the company introduces daily nonstop roundtrip service from both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, effective June 2, 2002.

US Airways will operate two daily nonstop flights from Pittsburgh and one daily nonstop flight from Philadelphia using 120-seat Airbus A319 aircraft.

``We see great opportunity for Portland-area customers to fly our new nonstop service, not only to our hubs in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but to many other business and vacation centers in the eastern U.S. and Europe,'' said Gregory T. Taylor, US Airways senior vice president - planning.

Taylor added that customers flying to Portland from other parts of the US Airways system will be able to choose from three well-timed hub connections on modern Airbus aircraft, bringing greater levels of comfort to transcontinental travel.

US Airways and US Airways Express currently operate 544 daily departures from Pittsburgh and 414 daily departures from Philadelphia.

US Airways, the US Airways Express carriers, US Airways Shuttle, and MetroJet fly to 204 destinations worldwide, including 38 states in the U.S., Aruba, Bermuda, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Nassau, San Juan, Santo Domingo, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Croix, and the Canadian destinations of Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. US Airways' transatlantic destinations include Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Manchester, Munich, Paris and Rome.

I'm not sure I understand how this will help US out of their current situation.

Also, US discontinued service to AUS and SAT a few years ago due to low demand. Now they are resuming flights as a part of their highly publicized plan to rebuild. What has happened in the meantime to make these two destinations more attractive than they once were?

Does anybody wonder about this besides me?

All they're doing is trying to keep 'the Street' happy.

PDX is a highly sought destination. My question is why its taking them ten months to add this to their route schedule. They're adding SAT and AUS in the next four months.

It seems wierd that they are waiting SOOOO long to start this. Maybe has has to do with the delayed Airbus deliveries?? I also think that SAT and AUS are going to be started soon because maybe they are popular warm weather winter destinations?

Pgh234, imo hit the nail on the head. Not that Portland is all that cold in the winter, but not as much demand as the Texan cities.

Contrails: I don't think US left SAT and AUS due to lack of demand. I think it was lack of leadership at the time, and US being in desperate need to get its house in order. For the most part, or at least the part concerning route planning, US' house is in order. Hopefully, restoring service to these three cities (where US has been to in the past) is only the first step. YVR and SLC should be next. However, it looks like and SLC additions will be too late to catch the gravy train of Olympic proportions there.

US 604 PDX 11:00 pm PIT 6:18 am+1 0 319

Considering they're only doing three flights per day at PDX, is it safe to assume that US will have outsourced ground staff at PDX?

When are they going to return to SJC? I used to work those flights, and the loads seemed fine.

I am not actually in Portland, I am near Salem but PDX is my home airport. Good to see US is finally getting back here though the prelim schedule seems a bit odd that there would not be an early morning flight to PIT. When US was here before, they 2 or 3 nonstops to PIT but nothing the PHL. Hope they have great success.

US was here when they took over PSA back in 87/88. They flew SFO-PDX (I flew these routes a couple times). I don't recall them flying to Pittsburgh, because back then they didn't have the 757s out west. I only remember seeing a 733 here.

They probably will take over some of the old Delta gates, although I'm not sure. It'll be interesting to see how the routes do next year.

Oh BTW-the only good things in SLE are the fair (great fude), and Scores...hehe Is that still down there?

Actually, Us pulled out of PDX after the merger and disintegration of PSA's west coast operation. The came back for brief time flying 737's to PIT and that did not last too long.
