Too Many Air Crashes , What's Happening?

Thu Aug 30, 2001 9:14 am

Smokin coolk - I understand probability and I know that air travel is very safe but I can't help but notice the number of plane crashes in the past week.

First the crash in the Bahamas,
then the Transat near miss
then the firefighters' mid air collision,
then the small plane that crashed landed in a cemetary ( has a creepy sense to it)
and now the crash in spain.
Agreed - they were all small planes, prop more than not - and yes - Air Transat pilots did a VERY VERY good job saving the situation - but still it was a pretty spankin' new A330 ... I mean come on here!?!

So - what's going on? (this question obviously has no definite right/wrong answer, if you could produce such an answer you should be rolling dice in vegas and not posting on this board cause you're probably a master of random probability  Big grin )

so...............

Exclude the light aircraft that drop out of the sky all the time and then we not doing too bad if you ask me. The Air Transat did not crash, end of story. It may have but thats not the point.

In terms of fatalities in airliner crashes, 01 is the 6th safest year since 1970.

To make you feel better, please bear in mind that in Britain it seems we are indifferent to having over 3,000 people dying on the road each year but should a plane crash anywhere in the world, then that is news!!

David itl,

I couldn't have said it better myself!!!!!

In the US, we have, on average, more poeple dying each year in auto accidents than the the TOTAL number of US military deaths during the Vietnam war.

But if four or five people are killed in a plane crash, it makes national news. I don't get it. Are the families of the auto accident victims that insignificant? It all boils down to sesationalism, and the media absolutely is to blame. They throw gasoline on these stories.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I also heard somewhere that in the US, more people die in auto accidents each year than have died on scheduled airlines in the US in the entire history of aviation!

Also, I think part of the reason for the media's fascination and sensational coverage of aviation accidents, is that they do not really understand aviation.

After all, most adults in the US drive cars, but a relatively small % of the population truly understands aviation (but thanks to Airliners.net, that number is growing  Big thumbs up).

Many thanks to all of the knowledgeable folks on here!  Big thumbs up

You can list lot's of analogies about auto deaths vs. plane deaths but the one that hits home with me is that the number of people in the United States who die in auto accidents each year is equivalent to a fully loaded 737-200 crashing every day...365 days a year, with no survivors.
I guess if you add all the auto deaths in the world each year it would probably be closer to a couple fully loaded 747's crashing each day. Very sickening.
