MSY: My Airport's A Magazine Centerfold!

Thu Aug 30, 2001 10:37 am

In the spirit of keeping this family oriented, let me explain:

The September 2001 issue of Airliner World features an article on MSY (New Orleans International Airport), where I've worked at since March of '87. The centerfold is a two-page aerial photo of the airport (looks to be about a year old).

If anyone out there has a copy, and wishes a quick tour from that aerial, please read on.....others may not pick up on most of this. And for them......at least there's no staple in the naval.  Smile

Anyway, for those with the mag, the picture is oriented north and south, the river at the bottom is the Mississippi. The air carrier terminal is obvious: concourse A to the lower left (US, NW), B is above A (CO, SW, AW), C is next to B (UA, AA, TW, YX, ML, J7, intls), D is on the left (DL and JB).

The large ramp to the west is FedEx, further west is one of our FBO's, and UPS, Emery, etc. Across the field to the north is our new general aviation ramp. Both FBO's will be there shortly (one is now).

As one can see, MSY is surrounded on three sides by residences and industry, and the fourth side by a swamp.

Looks like a decent article.

In reading the article, I find a paragraph that amused me:

"In 1994, having told voters that one of his top priorities wound be upgrading NOIA from it was to what it should be, Marc H Morial was elected as the city's Mayor. He said, "it was embarrassing to acknowledge that airline executives spoke of our airport as fifth-rate. It was ugly and often dirty".....An $850 million investment program was agreed, and work began in 1995....concourses A nd B renovated....C and D completly rebuilt...".

It's amusing in that this construction program was actually begun in 1988, and the above terminal work, and other construction was actually planned and begun under a previous mayor, and previous airport management. It's typical that politicians take credit for something they had very little to do with.

As an aside, our mayor decided to put his signature on all the vending machines in the terminal!!! Ah yes, to be a politician!

Hey Tom in N.O., I thought that was a terrific article and photo. Is that a 767 rolling on the e/w runway?

Too bad no historic shots of Delta DC-8s or National DC-10s.

You sound pretty enthusiastic about your home airport. back in 1990 I flew from BHM to MSY on Southwest. I lived in Atlanta but my girlfriend and I drove to BHM since they had the cheap flights to New Orleans. Back then it seemed like the airport was kind of run down. I'm sure its nicer now....I'd like to go back. I look forward to reading the article. My first (and only) trip to bayou country was fun...louisiana seemed like a different country.
I like to fly around N.O. on FlightSim 2000. What kind of traffic do they get at the Lakefront airport there? It's a cool little airport on flightsim.

MSY is a beautiful airport. I fly out of there alot. Its clean, easy to move through, looks good, good restaurants and shops, and good fares. I live near GPT, but I use MSY over it all the time. GPT cant even support jet service. Were lucky NWA and FL are still with us! COX got nothing but props, ASA is getting all jets they say, but everytime they do it, it fails.

GO MSY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lakefront Airport gets most of the general aviation traffic, and is one of ths busiest general aviation airports in the county, with around 500 daily arrivals/departures. They have flown a 727 into NOL. The main runway is around 6900 ft., so most commercial a/c could utilize it if they had to.

MSY gets all of the big traffic, including several Delta 767's and 757's, Continental 757's, Fed Ex A300's, and United 757's sometimes. In addition, we see numerous charter flights. Lots of ATA L1011's, and this past June, Air Atlanta Iceland brought in 747's for 5 charter flights.

All in all, a great, under-utilized, medium-sized airport.
