SriLankan: A Boost For The Maldives

Fri Aug 31, 2001 4:31 pm

The Maldives will get non-stop flights from Male to both Tokyo and London soon, when Sri Lankan will route two weekly flights each via Male.

Interesting developments. I wonder if in future more European flights will do the same, like Zurich, Rome and Paris. The Maldives could do with extra capacity ever since Air Maldives ended all their A310 international routes. Do they still fly regionally though?

That makes sence, a lot of tourists are travelling through Sri Lanka in connection with a holiday on the Maledives. (Actually I wouldn't travel through Sri Lanka).
I think why Air Maledives ended their A310 service was the fact that a lot of tourists fly charter carriers from their own country or travelled with Emirates via Dubai or Sri Lankan via Colombo. Because of the high fuel prices on the Maledives they couldn't bring the ticket prices below the other airlines or they have to do a technical stop in dubai like some other carriers do.
It is good for maledives to concentrate on the regional market!

Male already has the direct connection with Zurich and a few german cities. I know that Balair and LTU fly direct to Male.

Milano MXP has direct scheduled connections to Male:
2 times per week by Eurofly (AZ code-sharing, one time via CBO with B763)
2 times per week by LaudaAir (one time via CBO and one time via FCO with B763)
3 times per week by Air Europe (one time via CBO and one time via Rome FCO with both B772 and B763)

Also these carriers provide several charters per week to Male both from MXP and FCO only for the main tour operators.
