My vote: Pan Am L1011-500.
Flew one JFK-GIG in 1985. Outside was filthy. Inside: dirt all over the walls, lavatory (in at least 4) lights that did not work at all, seats that had stains on them, and headrest covers that I instantly removed when I saw the state of them. The only good thing about the flight was there were only 50 passengers on board.

Agreed, some of Air France's planes are filthy (outside at least). Having an all white livery does not help.

Sorry for reaching into the past again, but this just got me thinking about a really "sooty surprise" I got at JFK the summer of 1971.

Before embarking on that trip I'd heard about Northeast Airlines and even received a scale model of their 727-200. Bright canary yellow, that was! When I finally saw one of them in person, I was really taken aback. The entire rear portions of several of their jets were jet black (pardon the pun). I then christened them "Northeast Dirty Birds."

It's strange....

....although Swissair has a color scheme that is practically all-white, you will never, EVER see a dirty Swissair aircraft. As you can see it is possible to keep them clean.

Do you mean an ATA L-1011 painted in that scheme?

Delta's Old Old Scheme

Sat Sep 01, 2001 4:32 am

While Delta has top-notch maintenance and professional employees, their older plane sin the old,old paint scheme are often filthy on the outside. A plane could be seen as a flying billboard, and people could look at those and (not knowing otherwise,) consider Delta to be an airline that does not take of their aircraft. The planes in their new scheme are shiny and look great, but the older ones are often neglected when it comes to their exterior cleanliness.

I'd say :

SABENA and AIR FRANCE

Sabena doesn't even have an aircraft cleaning department, they just change livery and repaint the aircraft when they all become too dirty.

Maybe there IS work for the 147 pilots threatened with lay-off ?

All the airlines have some dirties in their fleet, but the one airline I've noticed has had more than a "few" is Delta and America West. There isn't really anything wrong with their service, their planes just need some new paint and a good scrub.

Myself,

As far as I know, the cleaning of SN aircraft is done by a third company, which is incidentally not doing that bad for itself. At all.

Also, you seem to be flying on other aircraft than I am, because only occasionally do I fly on one that looks like it just returned from CTA, if you know what I mean.

Best regards,

TriStar.

After reading all the answers, I think we can say, that Skyteam is the "dirtiest" alliance arround...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As I see, Delta, Air France and Alitalia have collected most of the votes here.

Seems like bare metal liveries look especially "grungy" if not given adequate attention. In Eastern's final years, its mostly bare metal fleet began to look very negelected as I recall. Same for Flying Tiger. On the other hand, American has consistently managed to keep the bare metal livery of its aircraft looking great.

We were never impressed with the external appearence with AF Concordes, from the replies here it seems the other long-hauls types in their fleet are the same.
The BA B747-236's that have not had the new livery, and are not far off retirement, look a bit grungy.
The cleanest I've seen, the Qantas B747-400 that came into our hangar a few weeks ago was immaculate, inside and out.

I have to say Delta has the dirties planes I've ever seen. Delta also has a lot of planes with paint peeling up. Looks very unprofessional in my opinion. The newer paint schemes look very clean and professionnal but I think given time they'll look just as ratty as the old livery.

As for United and Northwest they can look dirty, but I think they are actually cleaner than they look, its just the paint that's fading, especially the grey.

"Northeast dirty birds"

Oh, but NE was a classic. They were an excellent airline, I was just young when I flew them, but dirt and all, they were "fun" lots and lots of in flight service, fold down center seats in coach rows, Great TV ad's. Then they merged into Delta Airlines in 72 or 73? Gone and forgotten, not too many shots of the "yellowbirds" here.

Thanks for the pic though. Bf

Delta has some of the dirtiest airplanes I have ever seen! I've seen some of their a/c in the old old colors that had as much mildew on them as the showers at a gym! ASA's Brasilias and ATRs in their old schemes are pretty dirty too! Some of AirTran's DC-9s are fairly dirty as well; they just never get scheduled to overnight at one of the cities that AirTran uses SkyClean to clean the exteriors of planes that are parked overnight. I can remember one time one of the planes was so dirty, that the ramp crews at several stations started to write messages in the dirt. We had this aircraft come back into our gate about a month later, and the messages written in the dirt on the aircraft were still there, including my own handiwork of the classic "WASH ME!" No telling when this plane finally got washed.

From the European majors this lemon prize certainly has to go to Air France. An airline with pure white birds should take more care off its aircraft. Air France even makes its brandnew 777s look like 20 years old.
In the US I guess Delta needs some more cleaning women. I´ve seen far more dirty airplanes in Delta livery already compared to its competitors. TWA is also not famous for washing. I remember a visit to NY a few years ago and thought "my god, is TWA bancrupt?"

Dirtiest single aircraft I´ve ever flown with was a L-1011 Tristar of American Trans Air. What a piece of smelly crap. Cabin dirty yellow from nicotine, loose, virbrating parts hanging from the ceiling. A door that couldn´t be closed and delayed the flight for two hours. Can´t remember other annoying details.

if you see a Lauda aircraft take a close look it at.
i bet they´re even much cleaner than Swissair, and they´re even pretty bright. i´ve never seen a Lauda aircraft which didn´t look as it was just cleaned and polished!!! they´re certainly doing a pretty good job cleaning the airplanes...

quite often i´ve seen pretty dirty aircraft from TAP...

A lot of Air Canada's 737-200s still in Canadian Airlines colors often appear to look unwashed.

But I've seen the 732s in transitional AC/CP colors being very clean. Even the interiors in those same planes are the cleanest I've ever seen in my whole life!
