Capt. Piche - From Hero To Heel

Sat Sep 01, 2001 1:52 am

Two days ago Air Transat Captain Piche received a hero's welcome. Today in the paper they are slinging mud at him and dragging a skeleton out of his closet. Someone started a thread about how despicable the media can be especially to aviation. This is a fine example of the witch hunt they will embark on when someone hits their spotlight. As if this Captain isn't going through enough already.

Capt. Piche did the crime and served the time. I say leave him alone - he is still a hero in my eyes.

Here's the beginning of the article. Some day I'll learn how to insert a URL.

Hero Transat pilot has drug trafficking record
Capt. Robert Piche jailed 2 years in U.S. in 1980s, newspaper says
MONTREAL (CP) — The Air Transat pilot who glided a crippled jet to a safe landing off Portugal last week served nearly two years in U.S. prisons for drug trafficking, Montreal La Presse reported today.

The newspaper, citing a corrections spokesman
for the state of Georgia, said Robert Piche was
found guilty in Nov. 1983 of ``trafficking a
quantity of marijuana weighing between 101 and
200 pounds."

Well that confirms it the STAR is nothing more then a rag, no better then the British tabloids...This has nothing to do with the issue, or with the recent events in the Azores, and has no place in the media...

Monday morning quarterbacking is always easy, and I do not want to dis-respect these men, so lets just wait and see.

But I have one question how do lose all the fuel from three independent fuel tanks? It would take 3 leaks or some form of mismanagement, right? Anyway, lets see what comes from the investigation. It should be easy, and we might be surprised by the cause...

1983. 18 years ago. Air Transat knew of his past, so he obviously wasn't trying to hide or deceive.

The guy paid his debt to society. What he did last Friday far outweighs his shortcomings of the past.

I give the guy EVEN more credit now for overcoming a personal setback in his life to courageously give back to society.

So he was trafficking it...what's the big deal. You have to find ways to pay for flight training these days, it's expensive. And at least he wasn't smoking it. Bloody media.

It´s certainly right to say
-that´s a thing of the past
-it´s nothing to do with his apparently superior flying skills
-he probably saved 300 lives
-he made a mistake and paid his debts off
-it´s just them sensationalist media blowing up a story

BUT

I dislike the way some of you play down the seriousness of his offence. Especially if you look at the amount, he should have been locked away much longer. Those drug traffickers, and ESPECIALLY them, are scum, directly behind murderers and rapists on my scale of dislike.

Come on people, what would you do if you knew what he did before you got on a plane with him. I don't care if he could fly a lawnmower, because he did what he did he shouldn't be flying people around.
