Is There Room In Canada For Another Airline

Sat Sep 01, 2001 2:00 am

Do you think there is room in Canada for another airline. With only four major ones (Westjet, Canada 3000, Air Canada and Air Transat but all with there own markets) is there room????

Canada is the world's second largest country. There is plenty of room for another airline. Heck, there is room for some ships too as well as a few buses.

How do you classify WJ and TS as major airlines?? WJ has virtually no Eastern access and no international route with the exception of some Vegas charters. TS is still a charter offering minimal domestic access. Even C3 is still not as well established domestically as it should be.

The amount of room for another significant airline is very limited. AC's incorporation of Canadian leaves little room for a new regular-service airline without creating massive overcapacity. Between Westjet, Canada 3000 and Jetz/AC Zip, the discount market will also be well-covered. And with a probable recession on the way, now is hardly a suitable time to start up a Midwest Express-style 'posh' carrier.

I for one would love to see another carrier to start up but as it was mentioned that with another recession on it's way I highly doubt that someone will make the same mistake that RootsAir / Skyservice did. They should have starte that airline when it was first announced. I think it would be totally different now if they had done that. Too bad, Seeing that Canada 3000 is not a real compeditior to Air Canada, Roots offered a real competitive product to Air Canada Excutitive passengers. Who knows maybe in a couple of years when the industry starts to get better we will see another stab at a REAL compeditior to Air Canada. Who know's Roots? Ya right. Don't think that the company will want to try and lose money again. Which is too bad.

Just my two cents worth.
