Amazing KLM 744 At MSP

Sun Sep 02, 2001 4:43 am

I was around MSP about 12:45 PM, and saw a KLM 747-400 landing. It flew over our car, and made a quick whining noise for about 3 seconds, then it stopped, and the plane flared for landing a few seconds later. Have you ever heard that noise before it lands?? Also, when did KLM quit the 747-300 service for 747-400 service on AMS-MSP??

i dont know, ive never heard a 747.

but, have you ever heard a airbus a-319/20 while on approach.

that is the weirdest sound ive ever heard out of an airplane.

I cant really explain it its so strange

Enjoy while you can. As from the winter schedule you won't see any KLM 747 till at least the summer schedule of 2002. The -400s probably fly to MSP as KLM doesn't have so many full pax -300s left.

BTW on September 2nd the PH-BFN will visit MSP and on September 3rd the PH-BFG will visit MSP (all B747-400 full pax).

WHAT?? KLM has operated for years with yearround service to MSP. It's a huge route, I'm certain they'll still fly to MSP year round.

Summer traffic is much heavier than in winter on the AMS-MSP route. KL will either reduce capacity in the fall by using an MD-11 or simply let NW handle it with a DC-10. It's the same revenue to them regardless of whether the plane has a red top or a blue top.

Kind of like in Detroit, Service to Amsterdam was increased, but KLM pulled its 747s for a while and instead their were five daily Northwest DC-10 flights to AMS.

Although I just recently saw the KLM 747 in Detroit again, so maybe it is back once again.

I remember when KLM used to have two flights a day to DTW, one would be a 747 and the other would be a MD-11 or 763

I've only been spotting at MSP for a few months now and it is always the 744 that they've flown in.

If the noise you heard was after the plane went over your car and it sounded like someone tearing paper (lots of it) then it was the wake vortices that you heard.

As from the winter schedule the KLM flight will disappear (at least till next summer). Leaving only the 2 NW flights (both DC-10).

DTW won't get a KLM flight back either.

KLM has only 3 743s, the rest are stretched 742s.
I wish I were flying
