DC 8 And B707

Sun Sep 02, 2001 6:40 am

I like these airplanes very much, do you know if you still can watch them regularly at an Europe's airport?

As far as I know the Italian Airforce still has some B707s based at Torino.

At Frankfurt the USAF also has some B707s 'on display' from time to time, although I do not believe they are based there.

At Brussels DHL has a dayly transatlantic DC-8 flight, leaving at about 6 o'clock local time.

If you go to Brussels, you'd better stop in EBOS (ostend), lots of DC8s here (african international, MKA, LWA,...) and lots of 707 (there used to be more: TMA, Air Memphis...)

C ya in EBOS

The French Air force has 1 or 2 DC8 based in CDG (they had more, but 1 has been transformed for electronic war and is no more used for transportation)

If a DC8 is in CDG, it will be parked at the terminal 1 (Called "le Camembert")
or at the Air France maintenance area (next to Fedex hub)
They are used as passenger aircraft or freighter or combi. (I took 1 of them to fly to Tahiti, with a stop at LAX)

Hello Douglas DC8,
those flights to Tahiti were in 89 and 90.
but I still see this DC8 almost every week, as AF is doing their maintenance, and AF maintenance is next to the Fedex hub in CDG

The last civil one I saw was a DC-8-73 cargo plane at ZRH (that's your country, but the other end of the country). That was about 3 - 4 years ago. Both 707 and DC-8 are very rare birds i civil colours today and they hardly exist on European registers. Maybe there are still a few examples bringing in vegetables from Africa on more or less irregular basis.

Cargo Lion no longer exists. There are many 707's operating out of Africa still and many DC8's operating out of the USA.Ostend and Brussels are your best spots for seeing 8's as well as Le Bourget in Paris where there are three DC8's flying for the French military. Manston, England has many DC8 and 707 flights also.

Perhaps Frankfurt am Main, where one could view (?) KC-135s. Granted, these are not 707s in the true sense of the word, but they are close. I don't know if any still have PW JT-3D turbofans (i.e., not refitted with CFM-56s). While I was at the central New Jersey coast, close to several Air Force Bases, I was treated to the sight and sound of these old birds (remember, the JT-3Ds originally hung from the wings of 707 airliners). I, too, love the DC-8 and 707; when I hear those old engines, I stop whatever I am doing. Having grown up with these maginificent birds, the sound of a JT-3D is something I recognize immediately, yes, even after all these years....

UPS will probably still be using the dc-8 after they retire the 757! lol. maybe not, but they keep claiming they have plans to retire them... still, two a day out here in KPDX (untill recently).

Yes,
UPS uses the DC8 quite a bit; tons of them come in here @ SDF (Louisville). I don't think that the aircraft leaves US soil anymore...I might be wrong on that..

Does anybody know if UPS is really going to retire their DC 8's?

I think the DC-8 will stay in cargo service for a long time in carriers like UPS. They will be using the newer a/c everday, and use DC-8s on days of heavy need. It might cost a little more money to fly a DC-8 then a 757, but if you need to park it 5-6 days a week, it is much cheaper then a B757 in the long run.
