When You Were A Kid...

Sun Sep 02, 2001 9:45 am

I was just curious if anybody else did this or was I just a freak!?  Smile
When I was little (pre-teen) I used to sit outside from sun-up to sun-down with a pair of binoculars, a watch, pen and paper and log every single airplane that flew by. Hmmmm looks like a United DC-8, ooohhh Pan-Am L-1011. Oh yeah! Piedmont 727!! I new that the Wardair 747 would be landing around 6 or 7 in the evening or when the LTU would be around. Ahhhhh yes, those were the days. I actually used to get teased in school when a plane would fly over..."What is it? A Delta? Hahahah!" Didnt care for that part but oh well. Life in the TPA approach path was great!  Smile

I did that when I was in high school, except the aircraft were different then.

Hmmmm looks like a TCA DC-8, ooohhh Nordair Constellation. Oh yeah! Eastern 727!! I knew that the BOAC VC-10 would be landing around 3:15 in the afternoon or when the Canadian Pacific Britannia would be around. Ahhhhh yes, those were the days. I actually used to get teased in school when a plane would fly over..."What is it? A Northeast? Hahahah!" Didnt care for that part but oh well. Life in the YUL approach path was great!

Oh, I just realized you are a woman -- I guess it must have been worse for you than for boys.

Cheers,
Pete

I used to jot them down as well. I had a used copy of the OAG (both the International and North American editions) and tried to match up what I saw in the air with what I saw in the books.

LOL! I did the OAG thing too! Or I would have my dads scanner when the weather was bad and jot down flight numbers and search thru the OAG until I found it! I wish I had flight tracker back then I might never have left my room!

Like you, except I had the schedules of all the airlines that served YUL and I created a typed list of all arrivals and departures in chrono order. All the while my parents thought I was doing homework.

I still do that sometimes!!!!!! You can see all the planes on finals to BOS right from my house. And a lot of them fly right over my house.( There's nothing better than a 747 flying right over your house!)

I was an OAG-aholic too! Lived too far from the airport for daily viewing. But I'm 36 and to relax, I take a blank piece of paper and create my own airline route maps! Make black dots, name the cities in pen, connect the dots using french curves (making sure to break the line when I hit a city name) Been doing this since I was 6. My friends can't wait to see each new creation. They think I'm nuts, but they get it.

hiya all
well my house is located 3kms to the west of the landing approach pattern on runway 27 @ melbourne airport Australia we frequently get saab 340's Qantaslink ex Impulse 717's and LOTS of QF and AN 762 and 763 its great we have the odd visit of a virgin blue 737 or 734 and Cathay Pacific A340 is a fortnightly visitor around here about 6 at night on a thursday
the Melb- LAX route is a must see as it is the only aircraft i really ever see heading away from the airport and that usually occurs late at night or very early in the morning like 7:00am but it is a must see
but my highlight was seeing wanula dreaming drop its landing gear directly over my house
well thats about it

I did that just once...then I brilliantly discovered flight schedules. After that it I just made mental notes of unusual activity over my house/at the airport.
