Avro RJXs To Fly Australia-NZ?

Mon Sep 03, 2001 7:57 am

I have heard someone mention the possibility of the Ansett/Air NZ group buying some new Avro RJXs for trans-tasman services. It also would be a good choice for QF seeing their large 146 fleet (through National Jet)

These planes apparently have a long enough range to open up CBR-AKL flights or even more importantly, CBR-WLG (another capital shuttle service).

These planes could also fly the Queenstown route (popular for skiers) from SYD/BNE (short runway) and possibly a Newcastle-Auckland link as was recently proposed.

And maybe Air NZ could even reopen Hobart-Christchurch, a route Air NZ flew at one stage with 732s.

Does anyone know of this rumour??? Can anyone confirm that these planes would have the range on a full load??? Would anyone like to fly such a (small) plane on what would be a long flight (especially if they are as slow as the 146s!)

Any info would be appreciated.

Would be nice to see the aircraft in Air New Zealand and QANTAS colours.

avent heard the rumor...thanx for the info and you do raise some very interesting ideas. Not sure if CBR-WLG would be that suceessful as they are small markets, and im not sure about their government travel. Other flights you mentioned I really do think have a chance, including a Newcastle-New Zealand route, but a HBA-CHC would be great.
