AC Starting FLL-YOW

Mon Sep 03, 2001 11:55 am

AC will start Sunday A320 service between Ft. Lauderdale and Ottawa on 28 October through 06 April, the only connection between Ottawa and the Miami region. Also, what seems very odd (then again, so does everything AC is doing lately) is that AC's MIA-YVR service downgrades to weekend-only service between 20 Oct and 06 Apr and reverts back to daily the second weekl of April. But late October through early April is the tourist season!

Regarding MIA-YVR, I believe that is the low-season for the cruiseships sailing out of Vancouver. Southbound passengers out of western Canada are more likely to choose the western states, or Mexico, than Florida for winter vacations. Asia is also lower traffic in the winter, so connections would also be seasonally lower.

YOW has been an exception to the rule of Canadian cities having a lot of sunspot charters in the winters, so weekly on AC to FLL seems reasonable, I think. Between some weekly AC runs, and Skyservice expansion, YOW is at least starting to catch up a bit on that weekly sunspot traffic this year.

AC183, yes, your right about the cruise ships. One of the main two reasons AC started Miami-Vancouver is because of the huge amount of South Floridians who visit Alaska, though I would think there would still be the traffic coming from Canada in the winter, after all, it's only an A319 (112 seats, I think). Your explanation makes sense, though. I really think it's sort of odd that AC decided to do YOW to FLL instead of MIA, though. AC has a much greater presence at MIA (as many as eight flights a day during the winter), and, even though most of the passengers are undoubtley going to be O&D, MIA at least offers connections on United, Varig, and Mexicana to those who want it. FLL is cheaper to land at, however, and most people in Canada would probably perfer to connect through YYZ.

This is good news to hear that AC will have two routes to Florida this year from YOW. I guess they decided to offer two destinations 1x weekly instead of MCO 2x weekly. YOW is finally catching up with sunspot service to other Canadian cities with Skyservice, Go Travel Direct/First Air/Cubana, C3 and now AC. Heck a couple of years ago YXE and YQR had sunspot schedules as good as us. Glad to see AC getting back into the leisure market from YOW, which they had not done for the past 4 or 5 years. Hopefully this will lead to some summer seasonal flights to Europe. I've never understood how YHZ has at least 10 charters to Europe per week in the summer and YOW has only 1.

I will add this info shortly to my unofficial YOW website
