Gulf Air Looks To Standardise On A330s

Mon Sep 03, 2001 11:36 pm

03/09/01 UK: GULF AIR EYES MORE AIRBUS A330S-FLIGHT.

LONDON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Gulf Air will standardise its long-haul fleet on A330 aircraft, Flight International said in a report that implied upcoming orders for manufacturers Airbus SAS and Rolls-Royce Plc.
"We have conducted studies and the A330 has been chosen as our long-haul aircraft," the industry weekly quoted the airline as saying.
"We will phase out the rest," said the airline, which belongs to the governments of Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Abu Dhabi.
Airbus makes the A330, which in Gulf Air service is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines.
The airline has already ordered six A330s but operates only four of them.
Flight reported that the remainder of Gulf Air's wide-body fleet was composed of 14 A340s and Boeing 767s, but that the airline planned to reduce the number of planes it operated by two - implying plans eventually to buy 12 A330s, which would be worth around $1.6 billion at catalog prices.
Rival Middle Eastern carrier Emirates also operates A330s with Trent 700 engines and revealed an order for two more of the aircraft last week.
Airbus belongs to European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co NV and Britain's BAE Systems Plc.

Off topic but I wish GF would change the arrival time of their flights from Bahrain to Karachi at present they arrive at the unearthly hour of 4.30 am considering its a regional route with not much traffic, the time is totally insane, strangely PIA's Bahrain flight also arrives at the same time on the same day, I wonder why thay have these stupid timings? according to an ex-GF employee they're reciprocal and whatever hour has been allotted to PIA to depart from Bahrain the Pakistani's have responded by giving GF's flights the same time, is that true? I also hope they ply the larger A330 on the route rather tham the A320. Glad to see the A340s go.

Erm....GF have 4 A340s - not 14!!!

The largest number of any particular fleet is the A320 which I think stands at 11.

Did Flight indicate where the money for this little spending spree would come from?

If I were GF I would phase out the A340-300s in favour of A330-300s - as they need the capacity on the LHR sectors.

Eg777er,

The article states '14 A340s and 767s'. That's the combined total.

Eg777er, i think you raise a very important about about financing.

Whilst in the Middle East last week i spoke to someone close to the Abu Dhabi govt's investment in Gulf Air. To put it briefly he was "sick and tired" of finding funds to bail out GF. Got some juicy info on what they'd ideally like to do with their GF investment.

Emirates777 - I think you could say the same about Bahrain's investment in GF, something which I also have 'juicy' information about. In fact, there is so much 'juicy' information about GF that one could fill a swimming pool...

I think they'd all like to throw in the towel, but someone's going to have to bite the bullet and do it 'first', in order to avoid loosing face!

Don't they have like 8 767s and 4 A340s? That makes only 12 767s and A340s... Just wondering.
