Gov. Inspection In Goosebay On NW53 Ams-dtw Flight

Tue Sep 04, 2001 2:52 am

Yesterday I saw that an inbound flight from Amsterdam to Detroit was delayed about 2 hours. I looked at the Northwest site and it said the flight was stopped in Goosebay (Saint Anthony). The reason it stopped there was said to be Gov. Inspection. Was this the US or Canadian gov. stopping possible drugs comming into the US? Or did amsterdam call Gander center asking them to stop the plane for some other issue? Any ideas?
I thought this was interesting. Hope you also do.

Hi !!!

This was the first time that i hear about this. They stopped a plane on the way from AMS to DTW in Goose Bay ??? Sorry, i have no idea why. If they search for Narcotics they can do it also at DTW.

Greetings from Germany

I suspect it was really a fuel stop caused by poor weather at the destination added to a high payload at the origin. A maintanence problem could have added to the fuel situation. Sometimes the wrong delay code is entered into the airlines operations computer and it is not caught. That has been known to happen (not that I ever made that mistake when I worked in operations!). Based on my knowledge of the U.S. Customs Service, they would not stop an airplane short of the U.S. but would rather catch the drug runner on U.S. soil.
