Tue Sep 04, 2001 4:17 pm

Hey folks,
One of Continentals 777's just landed in Gander on its way to Paris CDG, as my girlfriend is working the flight, I am naturally curious as to what the reason is. If anyone has a clue, let me know.

Jer
Ps, dont say 'why dont I ask her', as I havent heard from her yet and probably wont until she gets to Paris

Looks like it's a medical emergency involving a crewmember. Continental 10 did indeed divert to Gander.

Press statement will be at 8 AM EST, so more details then.
It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

I will give a buddy of mine at EWR ops a call later on and see what happened. If there is no release prior to that, I will post the information I receive.

I got this ATC from one of my buddies in Gander who had a scanner. CO 10H IAH-CDG. Gander is CYQX.

"Gander, Gander Continental 10 Heavy Checking In For Vectors To Track Tango. ETA to track 4:19."

"Continental 10 Heavy Track Tango approved. Be aware heavy 747 entering track 7 miles behind you keep your speed up."

"Roger, Continental 1 Heavy."

"Umm. Gander we have a situation."

"Continental 10 Heavy what is it?"

"We have a medical emergency on board"

"Continental 10 Heavy are you declaring an emergency?"

"Err. Affirmative"

"Continental 10 Heavy descend maintain flight level one-niner-zero. Turn left heading 040."

"Continental 10 Heavy Roger"

"Continental 10 Heavy descend at your discretion to 11,000 feet."

"Roger, CO10H"

"Continental 10H contact Gander approach on 128.5"

"28.5 CO10H"

"Gander approach CO10H on runway heading for 04. CO10H descend maintain 5,000, slow to 145 at your discretion sir"

"Down to 5,000 slow to 145"

"CO10H contact tower 118.1"

"18.1 CO10H"

"CO10H winds are 030 at 17 cleared to land 04."

"CO10H Roger"

Thats all that I got.

CO 777 Gander Etops Problem

Wed Sep 05, 2001 1:02 am

Hello Folks,
Just got the latest scoop on why the CO 777 was delayed so long in Gander. Apparently there was an ETOPS regulation problem due to the fact that the plane landed in Canada. While I would like this confirmed by 777gk or calpilot, all ETOPS certifications for Continental are actually for flights to and from the US only. As the flight landed in Canada, and then was to continue to Paris, the ETOPS certification was invalidated. Continental had to get Houston to get clearance from the Canadian Aviation authority to complete the journey. Secondly the crew had written up a small repair needing done in the log-book, and as it was a new flight from Gander to Paris, the mechanics had to repair it before the flight could continue.

I had no idea that the ETOPS certification was country specific. Anyone that wishes to shout at me about this, or flame me if I am wrong on the ETOPS ruling, can take it up with the pilot from the flight as he is the source of my info

take care

Jer
Ps, the actual reason for the diversion was a passenger medical emergency (seizure), not a crew emergency as DeltaSFO had earlier stated

After reading all that transpired, it is amazing that CAL #10 was only 4.09hrs late into CDG. Landed in Gander at 3:24am, gate at 3:58, closed door again at 5:30 and finally took off at 8:40 am. It was that last wait that had to be so bad!

I didn't know that ETOPS rules varied from country to country. I thought that it was agreed on by all airlines and their aviation authorities.
