So quick? Why are they in a rush to retire them? They still in good shape I suppose.........

Good ridance to those retched relics!!! I flew on a 747-200 DEL-LHR in 1999. The interior was dirty and faded. The panels in the back were disjointed and two of the bathrooms were shut down. My mother and I were delayed in Delhi for over 24 hours due to a mechanial delay. They are the only type of aircraft that BA currently has that causes chronical delays at DEL and LHR and sometimes at JFK. They need to get more 777s or 767s on the routes.

BA is responding to the global economic slowdown in an appropriate way. they're cutting capacity. i assume they'll be shifting some aircraft around.

for example, they don't need to fly a 747 from lhr to jfk. a 777 or 767 would do just fine. if the biz pax aren't flying, the smaller aircraft would be just fine.

i expect the 747-400s to be deployed on longer routes that are currently being served by classic 747s.

Will they drop any routes? I doubt they can get rid of 13 (I think that's the number) 742s without dropping routes or decreasing frequencies. I do know, however, SEA-LHR goes 744 on 28 Oct and MIA-LHR reverts back to 744 on 28 Oct after using 742s since May. So there are three aircraft.

The 742's have been on their way out at BA for a long time so this should come as no surprise. British Airways
is standardizing its long haul fleet around the 747-400
and the 777 and some 767's (notably the JFK-MAN
route, which has been rumored to be axed soon).

Everyone has known about the going out of BA's 742s, but it was supposed to happen at the end of 2002, no?

It's a shame that the 742s are going, esp. G-BDXG, which I have flown on. Plus, it's tail was one of the better ones (Blomsterang).

Here at BOS, BA is going to 777s and 744s though soon.

They were good in their time. Now so many people complain about BA's 747200 out of Seattle. Terrible leg room, old, dirty, audio does not work, etc, etc. It will be good to see the 747400's here.

They were due to go by April 2002 anyway. The youngest was delivered in 1987, most date back to the late 70's.

Hi!

I think I expected that sooner or latter, after the 100's gonne and receiving more 777's the 200 would go too. Infact this summer when I was on my way to Canada and USA I stopped at Heathrow and I didn't expect to see any 200's but I saw still some of them, not many but a few still. Now regarding the 200's beeing old and dirty, well if you want to know I flew in July from LHR to YYZ in a 747-400 ( G-BNLD ) and I can say that even beeing a 400 series it didn't look too young, I think they will probably install soo the new interior with PTV's but that plane was quite tired ( the interior of course ). Finnally my tribute to the 200 classic, I flew twice:

G-BDXG - 1982 - LHR/JFK - First British Airways clrs
G-BDXF - 1998 - LHR/BOS - 2nd. BA colours clrs

Sad to see them go. I´ll be in London later this month, so I´ll have to take a day out for spotting knowing it will be the last opportunity to see them. The Classics are a beautiful breed. But BA´s fleet is too big. Better retire the 742 earlier and keep all 744s. If business isn´t recovering soon I guess they´ll have to reschedule delivery of 777s on order to a later date.

Neil, I don't often mis-read things but that mis-read was a classic, pardon the pun!

Is BA still trying to get rid of some of it's 747-400s in light of this recent announcement?

Really too bad. I'll fondly remember my January flight on "City Of Winchester" from Detroit to LHR on a nearly empty plane  Crying Any guesses how much they might sell that one to me for??

Maybe Hong Kong can expect more of the -200's !!. They an come and join G-BDXP (now TF-ATZ) and G-BDXM at HAECO.

BA hasn't used 742s on the SFO route for a couple of years, it's all 744 now.

The decision to retire the 742's wasnt made in the recent meeting.

The following will be going to Air Atlanta:
G-BDXF, XI, XJ, XL, XO

They *should* then go on as follows

XF will then go on lease to Saudia
XI, XJ, XK, XL will then go on lease to Garuda
XO will go on lease to Biman

Regards
