Can anyone shed some light on what the hell happened to this plane?

It looks like they have started to strip the paint.

But that would not explain why they are towing it.

No, you're right...they're stripping it. It takes several applications. Probably moving it to another paint stripping area/bay.

There is a company at PAE that paints planes for Southwest.

Are you sure that 'another' one is going for Southwest 'canyon' blue, and not Pepsi Cola blue?

I found this picture looking for a blue -200 and found none. And you saying 'another' one implies that there are already 1 or more -200's in blue.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like there are a bunch of squatters on this site armed with their cameras that shoot three rolls of film, within seconds of a plane emerging from a hangar (apparently they have nothing better to do with their time but sit and wait for a plane to emerge....just like a butterfly from a coccoon.). And they take their pix, and then rush right over to the photo lab and then home so they can upload their pix, so that a livery can be less than 24 hours old and already be on this site.

But for some reason, I see no Southwest N/C 73S.

Um. . . If any of you would bother to look at the date, it says 1999. I doubt that a 732 could go into the hangar in 1999 and not have emerged yet.

My guess is that it was painted into Southwest's livery since the photographer says the old registration was N721ML.

Also, there are pictures of that same plane in the Southwest old (not blue) colors taken in 2001.

BF Goodrich does heavy maintenance for WN at PAE. The aircraft is on it's way to the paint shop after a C or D check.

Judging by the old registration mentioned by the photog, it appears this bird used to belong to the original Midway Airlines.

However look at the date, that was two years ago so it's not going to be painted in blue at the time of the picture.

Oh and there is at least on blue 732. Saw it at MDW a few weeks ago but didn't have my camera.

There are 3 blue 2H4s out there, but they are all slated for disposal by 2004 (when the last 2H4 is sold or stored). I don't have the tag #s off the top of my head but I can find them if anyone is interested. Peace to All.

BTW, the A/C in question is emerging from a C-check, probably the amarillo facility, but I guess the photographer would know better. Doing this involes some Xray work on the 2H4 so it is a convenient time to strip the paint (when neccessary). Personally, I don't see how, but that's the way we do it.

Or maybe it's the reason SWA has so much money. They've sacrificed painting their aircraft

What are the N #'s on the "Blue" -200's? Post them or e-mail them to me please. Thanks.

I toured this plane on 7/02/01... It was freshly painted and looked great. The picture you see hear was going to OVERHAUL
