Can Pilots Listen To Music?!

Spent a pleasant hour in Seat 2c on a Continental Express Beech 1900from MBS to CLE yesterday....

Question: Can pilots pipe "non-flight related" audio into their headphones? (i.e. music, commercial radio)

The BE1900 has no cockpit door (an awesome thing!) and I noticed as we sat comfortably at our crusing level of 17,000(the autopilot readout) the Boss in the left seat was bobbing up and down and finger snapping!

I wondered if he was catching some tunes...but I could also chalk it up to the simple joy of flying. It was a flawlessly perfect flying day over SE Michigan and Lake Erie.

BTW he was the picture of concentration at climbout and during descent and approach....just wondering if during those few minutes in great weather at assigned altitude he was piping in the latest rock & roll!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In theory, no, they are not supposed to. At my last job at an airline, company policy was not even any reading material in the cockpit,i.e. no papers, magazines, etc. This policy was widely ignored, by the way. As for music, you won`t see any discmans, but the ADFs will receive AM commercial stations quite well.

In some of the charter aircraft, especially the new props like the 2000 saratogas and senecas, youll find cd players up front. Its kind of annoying though, since your music is always being blocked by ATC transmissions if youre on an IFR flight plan. It is rigged so that any transmission on your active com frequency blocks out the music. It works great though when youre VFR and not talking to anyone.

yea dont you hate it when those stupid controllers interupt your fav song with some stupid vector or traffic advisory. just kiddin but if i were flyin a b1900 i would be especially viggilant of how i conducted myself since there is no cockpit door you never know who could be a passenger or non rev on that flight.

funny you say that....at boarding, a bussiness type stepped in, looked at the rather cramped cabin and sarcastically said "This is cute.." The pilot looked back and said "Hey! Do I come to your workplace and make fun of your office?" It was good natured but I noticed a certain amount of seriousness in the Captain's voice!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
