Biz Class On AA 767-200s

Thu Sep 06, 2001 1:31 am

Hi All,

This December I am travelling to Europe on American Airlines, and our family was fortunate enough to beableto use our frequent-flyer miles to upgrade to business class on each flight. The routes we will be flying are SAN-JFK-CDG on a 767-200 and 777, and LHR-LAX-SAN on a 777 and Saab 340. I think the 767-200 will probably be domestically configured, yet have separate First, Business, and Coach class cabins. My question is whether there will be a different type of seat on the 762 or 777, or whether the only difference between the two business classes is the pitch. I've heard that pretty much all of AA's fleet has the "new" type of business class seats, but I'm wondering if there are still some unreconfigured planes out there with older type of seats, possibly like the ones with the brownish motif that I saw in an Md-11 once. Thanks in advance for any info.

Aaron - The only planes left with the brown seats are the ones that are going away... MD-11s and 3-class A300s. While the domestic 767-200s do have a smaller pitch in Business than the international fleet (currently 40" domestic vs. 60" international), I have read that the pitch on the domestic fleet will be increased - don't know whether it'll be in time for oyur trip or not. In any event, the domestic Business pitch is no worse than normal domestic First, and seemed more comfortable to me. As for the seats themselves, they'll be the same as the 777 seats, with less recline due to less pitch.

Purdue Arrow is right. The MD-11's still have the brown leather seats in their business class cabin, they are not going to be reconfigured since they are on their way out. There's no point. The last MD-11 will be phased out at the end of this year. Earlier this year, my parents flew on an MD-11 from Sao Paulo to Dallas in business class, they said the aircraft looked old. I knew what they meant, they meant that the aircraft didn't have the new seats.
The 767-200's do have the new seats in the coach cabin and business class but they still have the old brown leather seats in first class. Aaron, the 767 you'll fly on from LAX to JFK definitely has a three-class config and three classes of service. If you fly business class then you'll have the new seats, you'll love them. You'll find them very comfortable.
Have a nice trip.  Smile

Trvlr,
The 777 seats are very comfortable ( w/PTV's for people who care about such things). The 767-200/300 seats are fairly new but narrower than the 777 and have no PTV's, even in First Class. ( They will give you a portable DVD player which you have to balance on your lap whilst you try to eat ) I would definitely try to get a 777 both directions. ( plus I enjoy watching the airshow on the PTV).

For the 763, the new business class is a great product(not to mention I am a HUGE fan of the 767). Just in case you find out you are flying coach(hope that doesn't happen to ya) you shouldn't be that mad. I flew AA coach ORD-LHR-ORD on a 763, and I was comfortable.
Also, I wouldn't expect the Business Class seats on the 762 to be as roomy and nice as the 762 ER and the763 ER, because the regular 767-200s don't fly the trans-atlantic flights, unlike the 767-200 ER.
In my mind, the 767 is a great aircraft, and you will have a good flight.

Did you parents mention the comfort found in the MD-11 business class? Do you know how much pitch/recline these seats have? Could they compare them to the new business class?

Lemieux66( I like the username btw!) I have flown AA MD-11 business class, and in my opinion, the recline, the seat, and the legroom cannot be matched. It was definately the most spacious business class seat I have sat in. As much as I love the 767, I will say that the MD-11's Business Class made the 767's business class look cramped and small.

I read on an airline rating website that AA's biz class seats got 3 stars, while DL's got 5 stars and most other's got 4 stars. Has anyone flown both DL BizE and AA biz...or AA biz and another airline in biz class...would like to see a comparison. Is the seat pitch really 60"? That's more than BizFirst  Big grin Any info appreciated...

Purdue, just a minor correction, but no A300s are "going away", it's just the 3-Class A300s are being converted back to 2-class to operate leisure routes (MBJ, SJU, KIN, PAP, SDQ) and high-capacity medium-haul Latin routes (that don't get many first class passengers, mainly just MEX and LIM) out of MIA.
