When Will UAL's 727's Be Retired?

Thu Sep 06, 2001 11:39 am

I love those planes, they are definite classics and I'm glad that I'll be flying them four more times before the year is out (ORD-MCO, FLL-ORD, ORD-LGA, LGA-ORD ). But another side of me also wants the 727's to go soon as far as passenger comfort is concerned - no video screens and they are still loud from almost anywhere in the plane. These are not complaints; just speaking in terms of comparison to United's newer aircraft. I will miss looking at them however, especially on takeoff.

So does anybody know when United plans to retire these birds and what planes will replace their existence? Particularly their most popular 727 routes such as ORD-LGA and LGA-ORD. I asked 5 different friends and got 5 different answers. Surely someone here could give me a more definite answer.

Thanks and best regards

By 2005 all of Uniteds 727s will be retired as more A320s come in.

They shall be missed......

Yes, as BA states, the A320 is replacing the 727-222. But I am curious- what five different answers did you get? This could start an interesting rumor mill!

We are down to 67 B727 when I checked at work today. We will be down to roughly 42 or so by year's end.

The five answers were:

1) All 727's will be gone by January 2004.
2) All 727's will be gone by the end of this year. (The least believable)
3) A319's will replace the ORD-LGA, LGA-ORD route but some 757's will be used.
4) Most of the 727's (80%) will be retired by next year.
5) 737-800's will replace the remaining routes that the A319's didn't take.

Not an answer No 6, rather to confirm one of the above: on my flight from IAD to LGA two weeks ago captain told me they were going to keep them for a couple of years. BTW, it was my first flight on 727 - and a great one! Old style interior but very clean, new seats. Reminded me Tu134 and Tu154 but less noisy and much less shaky... so bad they will be gone so soon!

RIX,

I can believe that. I would suspect that the IAD-LGA would be one of the last routes to be replaced. Generally speaking, I think that the shorter routes (such as IAD-LGA) are going to be the last to be replaced.

First of all,I seriously doubt the 737-800 rumor-it's been discussed to death here. I was lucky enought to fly on UA1777 ORD-LAS last Sat. and UA438 ORD-ROC (we haven't had UA 27's here since spring!!) I will miss them in UA colors, but I also like the A319/20's,too. I will miss the soot-trail from #2 on approach when I spot, too!

Of course if the economy in the U.S. continues it's slowdown the 727 retirements could be speeded up even more. I heard a rumor that UA is looking hard at the 757-300 to replace 727's and the 767-200's. No matter what happens I will always have happy memories of how quiet a 727 is just after takeoff, when the flaps are up and before you have reached cruise speed. You need to ride in the front of a 727 just once to experience this strange quiet for a few minutes.

I flew on one in June and will never forget it. I will always remember that flight because it is probably my last 727 flight. All the UA ones will be gone by late 2002-2003. RIP UA 722.

By the way, does anybody know who, for the most part, will be in line to buy UAL's 727's?

On my last 727 flight, we were delayed 3 hours due to mechanical, and I sat next to Greg Kinnear (actor).
