KLM does not fly to DFW. It was either:

a) a diversion from IAH
b) a Korean Air plane (they have similar colours)
a.

You say you saw it at around the same time Korean Air comes in? Was it Korean Air?

They do have very similar paints.

I work air traffic at the Waco regional airport just south of Dallas and know for a fact that they have had many occasions of late when they were using flows to reduce the number of inbound aircraft (at IAH) due to weather. I also heard that they had to shut down a runway the other day due to the need for repairs. We had a Frontier 737 land at Waco as it was enroute to IAH. The KLM 747 was probably a divert to DFW when it was suppost to go to IAH.

Atcboy73,
I love ATC. I too want to work for some branch of Waco. Then go to AUS, IAH TRACON, then finally to JFK TRACON. We should chat sometime. I listen to my scanner from AUS and I pick up all Waco freqs. Anyway, KLM sometimes comes to DFW on quick, like 1 hour diversions. AUS gets the brunt of west coast/Pacific diversions, with some European exceptions. When IAH is closed, I usually see European traffic divert to MSY.

I bet someone could tell the difference between a KLM and Korean plane. Even though they both are blue, the tails and lettering are quite different. So it must have been a KLM at DFW. Houston has had some bad weather the past few weeks.

It was a diversion from IAH, as DFW is the only other Texas airport that has the facilities to handle crowded long-haul flights. I know AUS and SAT have customs facilities also, but not to the capacity like DFW. There are one or two pics of CO 777s at DFW due to bad weather at IAH. I am sure that IAH gets some DFW long haul diversions(I would not be surprised if you have seen a Sabena A330 or a JAL MD-11 in IAH due to DFW diversions).
I wish the KLM flight was scheduled  Smile

AUS has like a 17,000 ft runway. I think that it can handle anything under the sun. Plus, its gates can handle heavies also. We get occasional 744 at AUS and we handle it fine.

All Hail AUS

That was a diversion to DFW from IAH. I heard him on my scanner that evening. MSY is the usual diversion airport for the European heavies, Tuesday being my first time hearing KLM divert to DFW. Though thats just what I've noticed, I'm sure its happened many times before. IAH always gets heavies (etc) from DFW, with its notorious stormy weather. Mostly AA and DL planes [767s, MD11s, (formerly) L-1011s, etc], though I've heard Korean land here once.

Like no it doesn't  Yeah sure . Don't know about the ramp size though, and those runways are damn strong.

just curious, how many times has AUS gotten 747s, that would be really interesting to see a large aircraft like that coming in/out of AUS. Although it probably wouldn't go near the spotters area, in favor of the longer runway on the opposite side of the airport  Sad

come on guys! some of you guys dont think i know the difference between KLM and KAL? I KNOW the difference, thank you very much, and a diversion makes the most sense... and AUS doesnt have a 17K foot runway, thats longer than Cape Canaveral's space shuttle landing field...

Regarding the KLM B747-400 that was in DFW on Friday was indeed a diversion because of Houstons weather.

Along with KLM, AF diverted one of there flights into DFW. Both planes took off around 3pm or so.

What gate did the KLM plane park at? Was it over at the Delta terminal by Northwest, or was it at terminal B by BA/JAL etc?
Also, did both park at gates and let the pax clear customs in Dallas or did they stick around on the tarmac?
