AA/TWA To Suspend Riyadh And Cairo

Sat Sep 08, 2001 9:36 am

AA/TWA is going to drop the Cairo and Riyadh routes due to low profits. Well this is the answer to our long discussions whether AA will keep the "prestigious" Middle Eastern routes. That makes DElta with its flights to Dubai and Continental to Tel Aviv the only American air presence in he area.

Keep in mind that AA/TWA still have the rights to the route(and a lot of other cities not currently served)

Rumors have it that AA will restore more than half of TWA's routes at JFK once the new terminal is on-line but they way Routes are getting cut left and right and AA raping JFK of these routes; I doubt it. I remeber on the days of PA and TW that JFK was the king of international routes. but now airlines like AA and UA are moving them all to ORD, MIA, LAX and IAD. I hope JFK will not become like EWR in the 80s after People ceased to exist.

So far it looks to me that DL, JB and NWA are the only three US airlines that really give a damn about JFK.

I think the JFK-CAI-RUH suspension won't be permanent. It will come back once the economy shapes back up. Though Virgin does have a point about international operations. UA is putting the bulk out of IAD and ORD, and AA will slowly be moving the bulk from ORD to MIA, while even DL is putting a larger amount at ATL (but the 2nd-tier routes, like Nice and Vencie, are, of course, out of JFK), but JFK/EWR should not worry. Very few, if any, other US cities can support flights to places like Venice and Nice on such heavy O&D the way the NYC airports can. MIA (AA/UA), ORD (AA/UA), IAD (UA), and LAX (AA/UA) will grow a lot, but are no cause for concern for JFK/EWR.

VirginA340, I think you're a little misinformed when you include NWA among the carriers that give a damn about
JFK. Northwest has a puny presence, one of the smallest of the top 5 US airlines. NWA has a daily flight to JFK, two or three DC9's to DTW, and that's about it.

Delta will probably make JFK into a regional hub once the terminal improvements are complete. I predict
about 200-220 Delta flights at JFK daily by 2005. As
for American, they will remain busy but they will not
restart a lot of dormant TWA routes. American is not
interested in making JFK a true hub. The airline is
dependent on O&D traffic to support its JFK operation.
