First American Airline To Africa?

Sat Sep 08, 2001 2:27 pm

Do you see any US airlines starting or restarting African service? I flew on Pan Am in the 80's to East Africa through Liberia. I could possibly see service to South Africa, Nigeria or Kenya. Any thoughts?

World Airways is making charters to Africa , as far as I know and I heard something about Delta flying to Nigeria. Not sure however.

If anything, you might see American Airlines flying between Miami and South Africa down the line (and not any time soon), but that's about it. Delta flies to Egypt. Technically, it is in Africa, though people like to call it the Middle East. I also doubt DL has any plans to serve Nigeria. I think they codeshare to Nigeria with SAA.

Technically, DL and TW both serve the African continent at CAI. You are probably referring to Sub-Saharan Africa. I think DL will be the first US airline to serve somewhere down there since the PA days as it is DL's stated goal to agressively build market share in Africa.

Does anyone remember USAfrica Airways, which flew IAD-Cape Town (or was it Johannasberg?) service with a couple of ex-American MD-11's for about 10 seconds in 1994?

I know that before AA bought them, TWA served Cairo. I know that they were still doing it in 1999, thanks to the North American Airlines Handbook. DL's timetable states that they code-share with SAA to the following destinations: Cairo, Dakar, Banjul, Bamako, Conakry, Ouagadougou, Abidjan, Lome, Cotonou, Windhoek, Johannesburg, Cape Town, George, Port Elizabeth, East London, and Durban.

I think Africa can be effectively served through code-sharing. The only viable routes might be to Cairo, Casablanca, and South Africa. I just don't think there's much traffic.

L.1011:

The first 9 cities mentioned are codeshares with Air France not SAA.
