Mon Sep 10, 2001 3:08 am

Why were American airlines like Pan Am and TWA operating domestic flights within Germany in the 80's?

Hi there,
For political reasons,
when Berlin was still
divided and Lufthansa
wasn't supposed to land
in any of West Berlin's
airfields.
regards.

Because german airlines were not allowed to operate to (West) Berlin. Only british, french and US-american airlines were allowed to. I remember in 1988, Lufthansa and Air France founded a joint-venture airline called EuroBerlin, which enabled LH to offer flights to Berlin as well. In 1990, all airlines were allowed to operate to Berlin, so LH took over most routes, american and british airlines returned back home. BA bought german regional airline "Delta Air" and created Deutsche BA.

Hope this helps,
Ndebele.

Just to add a bit more info...I believe that in the beginning, after the war, when the western Allied powers set up the flight arrangement, each (England, US & France had flights from their occupation zone to Berlin(tegel), as well as from Paris, London and Frankfurt(US)). I am not sure when it evolved to the state that existed in the late 80's thru early 1990 or 91.

When we visited Germany (& Berlin) in late winter 1990, we flew the Pan AM IGS from Frankfurt to TXL. I will always remember that , as it was my last PA flight before they went under. Also will never forget the differnce between E and W Berlin at Night when taking off from TXL.
