BA's Worrying Futur Plans!

Tue Sep 11, 2001 5:10 am

Here is a summary of an article about BA's futur plans... You can find this article at this address :

This article is about BA's plans to cut capacity through switching to smaller aircraft : instead of using B757 , they'll be using A319 and instead of B744 , B777... What worries me is that they are only cutting capacity on the economy class !!!
They are going to cease some operations at Gatwick mainly European destinations... But the the thing that made me worry is the following :

Stinnes , head of investor relations at BA , says: "The route network will also change. If you ask me if we'll be flying to holiday destinations like Malaga in three years' time I would say no. We're looking for places with a good business mix. While the short-haul network will go to fewer destinations, the frequency of flights to the cities we do serve will increase substantially. We'll offer the best and most frequent services to the biggest and most important business cities in Europe."

So does that mean that Ba will only serve Par, Fra , Ams, Zrh , Gva , Mad... and what about Malaga , Sevilla, Faro, Zagreb, Riga, Bilbao, Genoa... And what about franchises like GB airways , National Jet Italy ???

BA's futur plans are worrying... What's BA without it's marvellous route network ??? What do you think ???

I wouldn't really consider it that worrying. I mean, why should BA serve cities like AGP in the first place? That's more an Airtours or Britannia market. I guess that they will still fly to major cities and maybe they will use a subcarrier for the vacation market, just like LH uses DE.
go canada!

I think that the holiday market in the UK is so saturated BA wants to focus most of its attention on the real money making routes!

well, the destinations possibly to be cut form BA´s network, like AGP, are just a few.
perhaps FAO, and, well, dunno, do they serve LCA?
but i don´t think there are so many "leisure" destinations in BA´s network so i would not worry at all.

btw, Lufthansa has substantial service to AGP, especially in summer, when they often use A300s to AGP...

If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.

BA flies to AGP 3 times daily using A321 on some flights.
These flights are operated by GB airways, a franchise specialized on those leisure cities... So, are they going to end their franchising with GB airways ????
BA serves Larnaca as well.

Which fool wrote that article? BA never had 100 B747-400s. And keeping 55 means that they keep all!

That they switch to more 777s means in first place that the older 747-200s are replaced by the Triple-Seven. And that a 777 needs 40% less fuel can´t be true. Even Boeings website says a 744 uses less fuel per passenger if full!

An btw: Nowhere this article says that BA will sell all 747s! Don´t worry, that would be foolish.
