ATC Radar Data Source

Wed Sep 12, 2001 5:04 am

there are lots of commercial products that show flight progress / flight data now... surely these all use some free, government provided source for their data... anyone know where it comes from, or where to get it for free???

This is an excellent program, and the same one that CNN was using to show the actual flight path of American Flight 11 into the Trade Center. I've tried accessing it to no avail. The FAA has suspended all data to all fllight tracking sights on the web.

To my knowledge, NO radar imagery is posted anywhere on the Internet. There are probably privacy and national security concerns.

The web site Peter mentioned, as well as trip.com and flytetrax.com seem to gather their data from onboard IRS positions and relay them through ARINC or satellite to the FAA and then to the servers. I don't think radar is involved at all. I've successfully tracked flights at 1-minute intervals across the Gulf of Alaska, far away from any ATC radar.

I am VERY curious, though, exactly which policy or agreement allows these private companies exclusive access to the raw data. They damn near have a monopoly on it. I haven't been able to find any info on this through Web searches, either.

I have Flyte Trax 2001, but i can't download any of the data.... so i think the FAA shutdown everything.

im not sure what IRS is... do you mean INS? When I file and fly on an IFR flight plan, I can see my entire route on fboweb.com, so this makes me think it is radar related.

Apparently then the database combines both IRS/ARINC and radar somehow.

IRS = Inertial Reference System
