Significance Of 757/767 Common Type Rating?

Wed Sep 12, 2001 7:36 am

There is a slight possibility that the choice to hijack these sister aircraft was deliberate.

How could that have factored into the plot?

One scenario:

The terrorists were given rudimentary flight training... and since the 757/767 have fairly identical cockpits, it would have been 'easier' for the hijackers.

--Or it could have just been coincidence, given the aircraft plying transcontinental routes.

Probably a coincidence. If they had the knowledge to fly 757/767, they could have hi-jacked any Airbus planes just as easily. 757/767 are standard equipment on AA/UA for transcon routes from major markets. If UA/AA had operated Airbus widebodies, I'm sure they wouldn't have been immune from the tragedy.

However, A32X and 737NGs fly BOS-CA, NYC-CA, and DC-CA area flights as well.

Obviously, they don't have as much weight or fuel capacity though.

I guess the 757/767 was probably default though, given that the largest airplanes flying transcons from BOS, JFK, EWR, and IAD are precisely these...

However, the choice of American and United as targets is blatant-- the two largest airlines are the worldwide symbol of American aviation, as well as American Capitalism in the aviation industry.
