Qantas' 747 Service

Wed Sep 12, 2001 9:16 am

Hi guys,
To anyone who has ever flown on Qantas 747-400 LAX SYD route or similiar. What is the service like? What should I expect (if I go)? When are the TV's planned to be totally in? Are the seats comfortable? do they show a Sydney video? Anything else.

All Qantas services to the United States have been cancelled. QF101, 25 and 11 landed safely in LA, QF7 diverted to HNL.

Thankyou KaiTakFan,
You are correct, I'm NOT leaving tomorrow. I realize that Qantas and every other airline shut down, and was diverted. Service. Not where they landed.

IF I go, I would be departing late june (as in 24-30), or early July 2002. I would be gone three weeks.

The seats are very comfortable, they Do show a Sydney video and as yet (As far as I know) only one Qantas aircraft has been fitted with PTVs but it is most likely that by 2002 when you travel qantas will be totally outfuitted with PTVs in economy. And the service is impecable. Enjoy your trip!!!

I flew to New Zealand from the UK on both Quantas and AirNewZealand.

Over the three years that I worked in NewZealand I flew many many times, resulting in an overall 4 times circumnavigation of the world in total.

Air NewZealand used to be ( might still be ) one of the best airlines I have flown with, in terms of breadth and quality of service, the aircraft are well maintained and well groomed. The interirors are very clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

A very close second was Singapoore Airlines, and they are marvelous.

I flew with Quantas as well and I was not impressed at all.

The flight was from Auckland to LA via Papete / Tahiti.

I had two cases ( the allowed 2 times 34 kg ) plus a one carry on.

I was 0.5 KG or 1lbs over weight. When told so I quickly offered to pay for the extra pound of luggage. That's a usual thing.

The check-in clerk was an extreme pain in the ass and told me that I could not do that. She ranted about some regulation that you can't pay for your excess lugggage. First time I had heard that in all my travelling.

Long strory short I had to take stuff out of myt lugagge to make it lioghter. Unbelievable because I was willing to pay for the excess but she refused to let me check in the bags.

The service on the flight was not the greatest either.

As far as I know, you are only allowed 4-5kgs in the cabin, anymore can be considered unsafe as it may fall on someones head inflight. I think if the Qantas check in attendant had allowed you on the plane and there had been turbulence causing your own luggage to fall on you from the overhead compartments inflight, you probably would have wished that you had removed some items in order to make your bag lighter.
QANTAS DOES NOT COMPROMISE ON SAFETY

On the other hand, you CAN pay for excess weight of your luggage if the article is checked. I'm sure that is quite universal.

I've taken the trip from LAX to Syd a few times now and if you can take the daylight flight. Because the night flight leaves around 9 or 9.30pm it becomes an all night flight arriving in the wee hours at 6.30am two days later because of the date line. In June July, Our winter it will be cool to cold and still dark. A long flight in darkness is no fun regardless of the airline.
They usually run what's called a movie marathon and show a succession of four or five movies in a row, and a short film about my country of about half an hour.
Naturally when the PTV's come on line there will be or should be a good choice of programming.
As to the service, I can say that I have never had a bad flight due to a lack of service. Generally speaking the food is excellent US bound and reasonable Syd bound. QF crew are usually attentative and very helpful and polite.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

Well said QANTASforever & AJ

I rate my Qantas experiences on the 744 GREAT and I must say that even though it is a 32" pitch, it doesn't make a great deal of difference.
With the new PTV's being installed, Qantas will truly be a great way to travel.

Qantas FA's are normally extremely helpful

Qantas is crap! Their seats are absolutely tiny and they cram you in like a sardine. Don't even waste your time with the claustrophobic spirit of Australia. I flew this route two weeks ago on United Economy Plus and the extra space on a long night flight makes all the difference. Book in advance with United and you will experience 37inch pitch compared with Qantas' 32inch and bad service.

Boo_oneworld,
isn't Economy Plus like a Premium Economy Class (I'm not sure). If it is, then of course it will cost more.

Qantas' seat pitch is not terrible. It didn't really matter to me and didn't cram me in.
Go look at Airliners.net interior pictures and they have side on pics and you will see that it is quite generous.

Isn't this about the extra space you will get on United?
Well thats the difference between 32 and 37...

You are comparing United Economy plus and Qantas economy. That is like comparing business class to first class and complaining that business class has less leg room. You cant compare different classes on airliners, that is absolutely no basis for a valid comparison.
Youve got a real chip off your shoulder, I personally would find it very unhealthy to be so damning all the time.

Hi QantasAirways,

Economy Plus works on a first come first serve basis and you don't need to pay extra. Qantas does have small economy seats and I stand by what I say. Hope I didn't offend you too much if you are so Qantas mad!  Smile
I'm Australian but unfortunately I can't be too patriotic to my country's airline with the product they give customers. Now that Ansett is cactus, Qantas will have even more of a monopoly  Sad
Go star alliance! and boo oneworld!

You may have had to take things out of your bag if each one weighed more that 32kg because the baggage handlers aren't expected to lift anything over that. It's an occupational hazard. That's also why they even tag bags as heavy and put the weight on the tag so the poor handler don't get a shock when they lift up the little bags with gold bars in them!!!

Hi Boo_oneworld
Okay, thanks for correcting me  Smile
I am not JUST patriotic, but all my experiences on QF have been pleasant enough to compete with SQ minus the entertainment
