United's Slowness

Thu Sep 13, 2001 6:19 am

Did anyone else find it alarming how UA responded to what happened yesterday?
From Paris they stated that a 737 had crashed into the WTC and a 747 had crashed near Pittsburgh. Both statements proved to be incorrect. You would think an airline would know which model of aircraft were operating their routes. Also the whole notion of flight 175 bring 'missing' for so long wouldn't inspire confidence.

I don't find it alarming at all. When incidents like this happen many people, including United's staff, receive conflicting or even wrong information. United needed to issue a statement, and did so, using the information they had available at the time. That said, none of United's press releases yesterday made mention to either a 737 or a 747. (at least on their website) I think they may have been a bit slow, but this was certainly not an inappropriate response.
