CNN Footage Of First (AA) WTC Impact

Thu Sep 13, 2001 9:15 am

This is probably the most dramatic footage I've seen so far. It's accompanied by the sound of the plane. I've never heard a commercial jet sound like that before!

ABC NEWS was the first to release this tape, I believe, around 1 or 1:30 am. I reported this here on another thread.

Truly amazing...I thought we'd never see the first impact and yet, there it was, right in front of us. I am left absolutely speechless.

A thousand apologies, N202PA.

I did a search under "CNN Footage" prior to posting. I was under the impression that it was exclusive CNN material.

Cordially,

The AA 767 seems to be on the verge of a barrell roll on impact...

The fuselage broke through the outer supporing skin, and probably collided harshly with the superstrong steel elevator shaft core... resulting in a massive internal explosion and distribution of burning kerosene.

No apologies necessary at all, TWA717_200. It may be exclusive CNN material, but it was shown on ABC. I wasn't in a room with cable at the time, so I couldn't be sure. Elizabeth Vargas (the anchor on call at the time) made it sound like it was an ABC exclusive. In the end, it really doesn't matter.

I'm absolutely in disbelief when I watch this first impact. Completely. It's even worse when you realize that the collision of that aircraft with the building literally drove dozens of people to their instantaneous deaths. And the most distressing thing is that with a fire of that magnitude, contained for so long in the tower, I doubt that there is even anything left of the victims for their families to bury.

May God keep all of the victims of these terrible tragedies.

Thanks, N202PA. As I said, it's the audio that sends chills through my spine...

It sounded much more like a fighter jet than a pax. aircraft. Which leads me to an odd curiosity of mine. How fast were those jet traveling on impact? I'm betting it was near or slightly exceeding the design limits.

I have never seen such scary footage before. It really sends chills down my spine after seeing that.

May all the victims rest in peace.

The engine noise of the American 767 was distinctly B767-200 at high power. Only the A320 comes close to that grinding sound.
Not a noise you expect to hear so clearly downtown in any city.
The 1:72 model of an AA B767-200 and a 1:144 AA B757-200 on my shelf are to be a constant reminder of this event.  Sad

What gets me about the footage is the way the buildings just appeared to 'swallow' the a/c without any problem. It just looks serious when the fuel explodes

Regarding the second hit I got the impression the a/c nearly missed the WTC and the pilot was banking to get it back on target

VC-10, I had the same impression; it appeared to me that only the wing would clip the building (probably still with the loss of the a/c) then the "pilot" rolled in for maximum impact.

They didn't almost miss. They banked to assure that the fuel would be spread to more than one floor. This assured that the buildings would be weakened and collapse.

According to www.fboweb.com, AAL11 was flying at 311kts at 2000ft ASL just before it went off radar.

The sound can be attributed to the fact that it was a low flying aircraft with the sound of the engines reverberating off the buildings.

The towers are only 1100 feet high I think. At 2000 they would have missed the towers.

The Sound

Thu Sep 13, 2001 3:28 pm

The sound you describe on the 767 2nd hit...

you say it's a high power sound. do you think he deliberately throtled up?

Is there anyone on here who works with jets...can you tell if the sound is that of maximum power application?

Also the speed. Is 311kts much faster than normal for 2000ft ASL? How fast would a 767 normally be going at 2000 ft?

The sound I described was of the first 767 hit. The footage, taken over the head of a fireman being interviewed (unrelated) started with only the engines being audible before the camera panned up to the doomed Boeing.
At full power the aircraft can exceed Vmo at 2000', leading to control difficulties. The aircraft would have been operating at high power, but unlikely it was full power.

Both impacts are terrifying.......I feel like all the dreams I had of Jet Liners crashing have come true....It is unbelievable to see a 767 crash into the WTC. I hope to never see anything like this ever again.
