Will Ansett Australia Go Out Of Business?

Thu Sep 13, 2001 1:38 pm

Hey guys! Smile

It makes me feel real sad while looking at Ansett Australia. Its such a great airline and now they are in financial difficulties. And there are rumours that it will go out of business, sending another great airline name into Aviation History.

My point of view is that, even without Financial aid, Ansett Australia will still be ok. It just takes time for them to renew their fleet, and improve their financial position.

Therefore, I have a feeling that Ansett will not go out of business!

Actually, it takes money, not time to renew a fleet. Odd that.

The regional airlines in AN group will be picked up, but AN will, sadly, be no more.

What about ANSETT AUSTRALIA? I strongly doubt that they will go out of business and send the name into History.

Perhaps an outside airline may buy up Ansett and keep its name!

The Government should not allow a dominent carrier in Australia.

Ansett are still flying, for at least the next 28 days.

Air NZ are the ones responsible for this happening, it will all come out in the wash soon enough as Price Waterhouse coopers look through AN's finances that were controlled directly by NZ.

I see.

Then after 28 days, will they still be around? I hope they will! For a very long time, keeping Ansett's name on hand.

Regards.

Mb is "absolutely" correct.
it's all AirNZ's fault for just dumping Ansett in their position.
I really hope that a foreign carrier can now save them... I dont want to see an "Ansett two"

I think there's no doubt Ansett Australia will go out of business... they have far too many problems and nobody really wants them.
As said, "Great airline, bad business"

Although, there always is the benefit of the doubt  Smile  Smile

Oh no!!!!!!!! I strongly doubt that they will go out of business. That would be very sad if that's the case.

Maybe United or Cathay Pacific should consider buying Ansett?

So, what are your views on that? Will Ansett go into History? Or will someone save it? What will happen next?

Regards.

UAL Buying AN ........I think not with all the problems it going through now (2 plane hi jacked and crashed, airtravel safety, economy, out standing labor contracts, rising fuel cost, etc.) I think it will be very unlikely UAL will even think of this.

Yes, Ansett will go out of business - and although they are running around blaming everyone apart from themselves, it's the unions that have to shoulder a large part of the responsibility for the bankruptcy. At nearly 250 employees per aircraft, Ansett's outdated union manning practices and pay levels have cost the company billions of dollars over the years - money that would have saved it today. Typically, they staged an impromtu strike yesterday - what investor, seeing that sort of behaviour, would want to put a cent into them?

And now Qantas employees are staging three hour 'stoppages' today as well ... the way the airline industry is going these people should thank their lucky stars that they have jobs rather than being whingers!

So, what will happen to them? Will their planes and routes be sold?

Ansett to be grounded tonight

A union representing Ansett employees claims the airline will be grounded tonight.

The Australian Services Union (ASU) says it has been told by the administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers that Ansett cannot continue to fly without Government assistance.

It has also been revealed the jobs of 2,000 caterers are at risk, with Ansett's catering company, Gate Gourmet, also appointing an administrator this afternoon.

Ansett is yet to confirm the union's claim.

However, Ansett's Robyn Newman says that customers will get to their destinations tonight.

"I'm making it very clear to everyone now that we are still flying this evening and we still have several customers booked on flights tonight and they should not be concerned."

Union organiser Steve Brooks, says it is still coming to terms with the news that Ansett's fleet is to be grounded.

"We've just had a teleconference with all the other states and we've just been informed that the Government will not underwrite the administrator so the administrator has said that they won't continue without the Government's support," Mr Brooks said.

"And the administrator has asked the unions to assist in bringing all of the planes back to port and that they will stop flying tonight."

Virgin Blue offered to buy 10 aircraft and take 1000 staff. I'm guessing they'd take up their 737's

I have heard that it is business as usual tomorrow - Friday & indeed over the weekend, although there is NO catering & airlines - SQ/QF & CX are no longer accepting Ansett tickets.
All the companies who supply to Ansett are waiting for the administrators to advise whether there will be money to pay them or not? If the administrators advise that there is the money then supplies will resume, if not then the simple answer is go to another terminal if you want to use the facilities etc.

I understand that there will be at least 5 days until the administrators have been through the books & the pilots-employee buyout proposal have asked for 21 days to come up with the required capital & be able to look at AN's books!

What a sad sad situation - A great company just hanging in there by the good will of its employees!

If you are flying in Australia over the weekend - (a big ask I know!) - but try and support the Ansett workers and fly AN!

Cheers

ABC Net Online:

Last-minute deal may save Ansett

Ansett Airlines may have been saved from immediate liquidation by a last-minute proposal being considered by three parties.

Negotiations are ongoing between the board of the parent company, Air New Zealand, the New Zealand Government, and administrators.

The ABC understands the board of Air New Zealand put forward a plan around midnight.

Last night, the administrators said Ansett's 16,000 employees should turn up to work today.

Let's have our fingers crossed and hope for the best today.

To Air New Zealand and the New Zealand government: You have made a correct decision. Congradulations.
