Will UAL Become The World's Largest Airline Again?

Thu Sep 13, 2001 2:04 pm

Hey guys!

After the takeover of TWA by AA, AA became the World's largest airline having a slightly larger network as well as market share than UAL.

Do you guys think UAL will regain the title as 'The World's largest air carrier'????

A few Analysts, friends of mine, have told me that it is quite likely for AA to downsize itself by cutting the non-profit making routes of TWA. And after sometime, UAL will have a larger market share than AA.

Besides, a few Brokers of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, believe that UAL may target on another airline, for example: resubmit another proposal to buy up part/whole of US Airways, after they have solved their Financial Difficulties. And they will expand again!

Comments on this? All ideas are welcome!

I don't think UA or any other ailrine, for that matter, will be in an agressive posture in terms of growth or whatnot, after the last couple days' events, they're just going to have to focus on rebuilding safety, confidence, so on... I don't think there will be much moving and shaking going on with the way the world suddenly now is.
Just my 2 cents Des...

That I have to agree! However, I do believe, eventually, UAL will become the World's largest carrier again. Its just a matter of time!

How about setting up Shuttle routes in the East Coast? Let's say a few East Coast Shuttle Routes!

The combined AA/TWA network might actually end up being bigger than the sum of the parts....how many fliers avoided TWA because of its small network, one hub, financial trouble, non-inclusion in worldwide alliances? Current & potential AA customers now have a much larger and complete AA network to satisfy their travel needs. Even after rationalizing routes, aircraft, etc. the combined AA/TWA system has more critical mass to fuel future growth. This may well keep them larger than UA, barring a UA acquisition.

United Airline,

No-one knows what the future may hold for United. Right now, becomming the worlds largest airline is probably the farthest thing on their minds.

United Shuttle is also a money loosing joke on the west coast. Dont count on seeing Shuttle grow out east. Our premium travelers try to avoid Shuttle out here on the west, bringing it to the east right now would be a very stupid thing. Having a North East corridor does make sence, but United isnt in the position to do that.

Also, Desmond, bigger isnt always better. Just remember that.

ILUV767,

I know bigger isn't always better. But I still hope UAL will become the World's largest Carrier again. Simply becoz I love United.  Smile

I think when the time comes, let's say, if the Economy improves, and when UAL has the Cash, they will probably expand into East Coast.

But they must improve their Shuttle Services.

Yyz717,

UAL will grow again I hope. And some Analysts at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter actually BELIEVES that UAL MIGHT consider submitting another proposal to take over US Airways, when the Economy improves.

So, let's see.

Anymore comments from you guys?

Remember what happened to once-mighty Pan Am after Lockerbie - within a couple of years it had ceased to exist. Both United and American are going to be hit with a massive loss of passenger confidence and multi-billion dollar lwasuits as their security (or lack of it) was directly attributable to Tuesday's terrible events.

United, the biggest airline in the world again? I wouldn't put a dollar on them being in business five years from now...

Its totally different I would say.

Panam is lack of cash. But UAL still has a lot of assets as well as cash in their hand. Also, Panam's size has reduced SIGNIFICANTLY even before the Accident took place at Lockerbie.

Just my 2 cents.

Besides, there was no such thing as Chapter 11 at the time when Panam go out of business!

But I don't think UAL will ever get to a point of filing for Ch 11. They will regain profit pretty soon!

United Airline - sure, Pan Am was sick - very sick - prior to Lockerbie. But the financial implications are very much greater than for Lockerbie - every ambulance chasing attorney will be after them on behalf of each and every one of those killed; the companies that will have been destroyed, the owners/insurers of those buildings destroyed... and liability will be easy to establish because of the US system where it's the airlines, rather than the government that's responsible for security. AA and UA messed up big time on that (though to be fair to them the chances of detecting razor blades inserted into the handles of toothbrushes - as is being alleged - are very remote)

Who cares about size these days?

This is the letter that LH's CEO wrote to UA's CEO:

===

Dear Jim,

The events in the wake of the appalling terrorist attacks on the United States of America, your airline, its passengers and staff have left us with a sense of shock and incomprehension. We are devastated by the scale of suffering that has been unleashed by this barbaric act.

On behalf of all our staff and the Lufthansa Executive Board I should like to express our condolences and our deepest sympathy for you.

I would also like to offer you our help. Please let us know if our staff can support you in any way during this crisis.

I hope you will be able to summon the necessary strength and fortitude to cope with with the aftermath of the tragedy, and that your staff will retain their faith in a better future, in which together we will succeed in banishing such despicable acts of terrorism from our lives.

My thoughts are with you,
Jürgen

I think this tragedy hit UAL and AA at very bad times, the economy is going downward and with this its even going to get worst. And now everyone is going to starts with the lawsuits and everything, I think that both UAL and AA are going to take some time to recover and the they could care less right now if they are the biggest airline or not.

First, I absolutely agree that the question of largest is totally irrelevant at the present moment.

Both airliners are likely to downsize in the coming months--the only question is which will downsize more. If you look at United's financial results from this and last year, you might understand that they were already performing very poorly. Under the present circumstances, they might very well be threatened by the prospect of Chapter 11. Please understand that I am not saying that that would be desireable.

Here's my glimpse of the Geshalt here:

Security at airports isn't ONLY a function of the carrier. At the gates, it's AIRPORT Security that is responsible.

The fact that AA and UA were involved was merely because we are the UNITED States of AMERICA.
If our nation was called Midway or Delta, I would put my money on the fact that those airplanes would have been targeted instead.

After the fact, think about this: Your company's jets have just been used to kill thousands. In the grand scheme of things, WHICH CARRIER is MOST likely to have the TIGHTEST security now? I would sooner but a ticket on AA or UA now then ever before. just common sense.

One question: I was under the assumption that as of the AA/TWA buyout, AA was the world's largest. Just for clarification.

Both UA and AA will be damaged..but will survive. UA the biggest again? Wouldn't rule it out.

The Pan Am situation was totally different from a financial standing. UA and AA are well insured...but I'd hate to be their underwriter!

Well United Airline as well as NWA ARJ i have to say Delta with its growing east-coast market share and the multinational-hub ATL will be one tough competitor for that spot

UAL is unlikely to go into bankrupcy, or chapter 11. They have a large amount of cash on their hand. So......

Um... no.

Shuttle is gone... that was beginning to occur even before Tuesday's horror happened. Look for all Shuttle routes to be replaced with mainline. Shuttle was an attempt to compete with Southwest on the West Coast. Business travellers avoid it at all costs, and there are lots of other issues that make it a problem.

United is losing money every day their planes sit on the ground and do nothing. They do NOT have a large amount of cash on hand, and I believe the American public will most likely try to divest themselves of AMR Corp. or UAL Corp. stock come Friday/Monday when the stock exchanges open. Although, freezing the stock might not be such a bad idea...

I just hope they'll be able to pull themselves out of this mess. Good luck AA & UA!

United is running out of money, but they have so much marketshare, I think they will be OK. Hopefully they can work out something with their creditors and avoid bankruptcy.

Will they file for Ch 11? NO! I don't think so. They are the World's most powerful Airline and they have a very large market share.

Given the tragic events in the past couple of days, being the largest airline in the world is probably the last thing on the minds of all airlines.
