I'm pretty skeptical that they would be found this soon, and even more that they would survive the collapse intact enough to be able to read. But we can be hopeful...

Does that mean found as in "located" or "retrieved"?

Ah, OK. If they can actually tell it´s charred, they must have seen it.

You know, I thought if they located it but it´s under that great pile of rubble, that piece of knowledge might not help so much. And until they find their way to the centre of the pile, the ping might have stopped.
How long are the black boxes pinging anyway?

According to CNN, the following black boxes have been found:

AA77 (Pentagon): Both the FDR and CVR.

UA93 (Pennsylvania): Only the FDR.

None at the WTC yet.

I recall that the pinging is supposed to last for a few weeks, maybe up to a month.

NBC's Bob Hager reports that custody of the CVR/FDRs in NTSB hands (from the Pentagon and Pennsylvania crashes) has been handed over to FBI.

Hager speculates that the quick handoff may indicate that there is nothing on the tapes, since they would otherwise be analyzing them closely for cockpit/engine/cabin noise, etc.

I would not be surprised if the CVRs were switched off as soon as the terros got control of the aircraft...

The black boxes are tested to survive a hell of a lot more then a building collapsing on them. They can survive fires in excess of 3000 degrees for days on end. They will find the boxes (eventually) and bomb the crap out of those pig f**kers!!!!

Poopsie, please... let's keep this on a human level.

The keys here are the CVR recordings. Apparently, on at least one of the planes, the pilot's mike was kept open to Air Traffic Controllers, meaning that there's at least one tape that may be able to give us clues.

These people obviously knew the capabilities of these planes, so we can only assume that they knew how to turn the CVR's off.

I don't believe that FDR data will be as valuable - we know where these planes flew, how fast they were going, and where they crashed. FDR data here would be purely academic, in my opinion.

Black boxes are not designed to withstand 200,000 tons of debris.
