KLM 747-300 Freighter

Is it true that KLM flies a couple of converted B747-300 as freighters. I heard it from a friend of mine and wanted to see what the vast amount of commercial aviation knowledge from this forum can tell me.

It was a combi, never heard of a 743F. It wouldn't make sense to drag that extra upper deck around, the -300 is otherwise the same as the -200 technologically etc (ie it's all analog, same engines) so there's no point when there are so many -200s on the market.

That is what I thought, Cedarjet, what are they going to do with the upper deck, cut another cargo door to access this space!!! Combis make sense, but full freighters just didn't on a -300 layout.

Its true. A 747-300F would seem like a crazy idea. A 747-200F would seem more logical. However, KLM disposed of all of its 747-200s or converted them to 747-300s. Hence, they really had no choice. It was either convert a 747-300 to a freighter or order a 747-400F which costs a whole load of money. Brian

Malaysia As Well

Hi All, As far as my records indicate, Malaysia Airlines also have a Boeing 747-3H6F Freighter. Unfortunately I am at work now and am unable to provide the registration. I still don't believe there is such a thing. With so many -200s out there? It's nonsense. you have seen -300 combis, maybe with the window slides down or something. The most I could concede is that they are combis that have temporarily been reconfigured for all-freight ops, but the airline must have been desperate for capacity cos as a freighter a -300 would be less economical than an old -100, simply because of the extra weight and drag from the extended upper deck. It can't really be used for passengers (the ones that pay a fare) cos the only access upstairs on an F is via a retractable ladder to the main deck, not a very dignified entrance. Of course all Fs have seats (usually ten or so 2-2 business class sized ones) up there but it's for airline staff, positioning flight crews, flight mechanics, loadmasters et al.

Boeing Wichita did convert 2 747-300's to full freighter configuration for KLM. It is an excellent modification which actually gives full capacity with some minor changes to the upper deck structure. These are not bastardized planes. Also, with regard to the drag of the 747-300, it is slightly less than the 747-200 even though that doesn't seem possible. When the 747-300 was coming out about 1983, Boeing discovered it was "more slippery" than the -200 thus there was not a drag penalty. 747-300's on the market today are excellent freighter conversion candidates and even Swissair was considering converting theirs until they gained an interest (SA Cargo) in Cargolux and bought a bunch of Citybird MD11 belly hold capacity. Think about it, a lot of 747-300's will be younger than 747-200 conversion candidates. Thank God for variety!!!
