New American Airlines Service

Wed Dec 02, 1998 5:06 am

American Airlines will start service to Paris (Orly) from Los Angles using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Do you think this is good for the airline and will make money?

I think that the route will not be that profitable. There are not enough seats on the 767-300 to make a profit on that route. Maybe they will move up to a 777-200 or 777-200IGW if the route does do well. I think that most people fly to Paris from the East Coast anyway.

Only time will tell. Still wish they would've purchased 747-400's.

I agree with you dc863. AA should have purchased the 747-400. Maybe they will see their error and begin discussions of purchasing 747-400s like Delta is.

Is Delta really going to do that? Wow, it'll be just like the good ol' days in atlanta
seeing a Delta 747.With one exception though get rid of the new Delta colors and bring back the old ones.

They definitely won't make money on that route with a 767-300ER. They'll have to leave a lot of seats open to get that much range, or else reduce cargo loads. When they get their 777s, they'll use that plane for the route and make a huge profit, making up what they lost with the 767. It was smart of them to get that route while they could. It will be popular.

What makes everyone think that AA won't make a profit using a 763 on this route? UA used 763s on SFO-CDG and SFO-LHR quite successfully until the 777 arrived. Also, don't forget that AA has used 763s on LAX-LHR for quite some time now. I think this was a good move from AA.

I don't think that they should use the 767. I didn't think that they had that type of range. I thought that flying from the east coast to europe in a 767 was almost all that it could take.

I think they should use either DC-10 or MD-11 for such a long routing like that ... It seemed you mentioned that AA will fly non-stop from LAX to Orly ? For the time beings, AA has flights serving from JFK and ORD to Orly.

You better believe it will make money. Now, west coast passengers can fly an american flag carrier non stop to
ORY.
However, the load factor would not have supported 747's. The 767 is the perfect aircraft for this route.
If you notice, Air France also operates 767's from the west coast. Again, it takes us back to economical operations. Two man crews and twin engine aircraft are less expensive to operate. Less fuel is also a big consideration. Ive been flying the 767 for UAL since it was introduced and there is no finer aircraft.
Ive flown all the series numbers in the 767 family and while her cabin might be a little tight, her performance is outstanding.

I also think that the 767 is the perfect airplane for that flight. The 767 is a fuel efficient twinjet flown the most on transatlantic flights. The 777 might have a load factor too low. So I'm persuaded that they will put a 767 and they may swith it later to a 777 if they make a lot of profit on that routing.
American currently has four destinations out of Paris: New York JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Miami and Dallas Ft Worth. So Los Angeles will be their fifth destination ! All flights ouf of Paris are B767-300ER's.
